The quick answer is eat less, exercise more.

The long answer is to base your diet around whole grains, vegetables and fruit, with some protein and unsaturated fat, and as little saturated fat, sugar and alcohol as you can manage! Don't try to be perfect, either - eating well 80-90% of the time is fine! Don't ban any food, but do consider carefully whether a given "treat" is worth the calories - all of us find that some things are!

Many of us find that if, as a rule of thumb, we fill half our plate with vegetables and 1/4 with starchy carbohydrate, the rest doesn't matter very much!

Other things that help are:

- keeping a food journal - if you write down everything you eat and/or drink as you have it, you can't kid yourself that you are eating "nothing".... our memories do like to play tricks on us!

- drinking at least 2 litres of water a day, which is incredibly good for your body even if you aren't trying to lose weight. But it really helps your system work properly, and keeps your metabolism boosted, so it's particularly important when you are.

- exercising regularly (yes, I know, that's the hard bit!). No need to spend hours in the gym unless you enjoy doing that - even just going for a walk is better than nothing!

- setting up a system of rewards (nothing mega - things like giving yourself a facial, or buying a new shower-gel, or whatever) for each milestone reached, whether that is the next half-stone marker in your weight-loss journey, or having taken exercise five times in one week, or whatever.

- making a commitment to keep on keeping on, no matter how long it takes, no matter how many times you fall off the wagon (you will! We all do!), no matter how many times you have a breather while on holiday, and so on....

I've lost about 5 stone over two years this way, so you see, it does work!

I'm not being funny, this is what works:

Eat slowly, chew every mouthful. Eat WHAT you want and WHEN you want it - but don't gobble down food, taste every mouthful. You'll find that you don't actually crave bad, unhealthy foods in the long run. If you eat all your food slowly and conscientiously, you'll crave a balanced diet.

You also have to do some exercise - nothing crazy, just a little bit every day; maybe a walk, bike ride, something to get the pulse up a bit.

The reason it works is this: Our bodies are clever and they naturally crave what we need if we listen to them. It's why people on Atkins would kill their friend for a croissant or an apple - they get sick of eating meat and eggs. And if you've ever been on the cabbage soup diet, you do crave some potatoes and meat. So if you eat conscientiously, don't overeat, eat slowly, and enjoy what you're eating, you'll find that you eat quite a lot of vegetables, enough protein, fat, carbs etc. It works out in the end.

Think about it: our bodies aren't defective. They won't keep making us fatter and fatter as long as we eat right. Eat in moderation and variation. But it's important that you eat when you're hungry and that you eat what you want. If you don't eat when you're hungry, your body goes into fat storage mode and if you don't eat what you want (whatever it is) then you'll overdo it later on by binging on something. The girls in my office skip breakfast, but then have a mars bar or pack of crisps in the late morning. Silly.

Some people are just meant to be fat no offence but it happens but the only chance for everyone is to eat healthy and remain active as in exercise or other activities.I have a feeling with the addition of your little bundle of joy you will be getting alot of exercise in the next few months and years.And regardless of your wieght be happy enjoy life and love your self.We are all different the world would be boring if everyone looked the same.Try to take care of yourself and dont worry about what others might think or whatever love yourself and remember that others love you for who you are :)

I have a Golden Retriever & I was buying a large bag of Purina at
Wal-Mart
and was in line to check out.

A woman behind me asked if I had a dog. On impulse, I told her that
no, I
was starting The Purina Diet again, although I probably shouldn't
because
I'd ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds
before I
awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my
orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way
that it
works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat
one
or two every time you feel hungry & that the food is nutritionally
complete
so I was going to try it again.

I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by
now
enthralled with my story, particularly a guy who was behind her.

Horrified, she asked if I'd ended up in the hospital in that
condition
because I had been poisoned. I told her no; it was because I'd been
sitting
in the street licking my balls and a car hit me.

Rules of Weight Loss

To lose one pound, you must burn approximately 3500 calories over and above what you already burn doing daily activities. Whew...that sounds impossible doesn't it? Here's how it works.

Calculate your BMR (basal metabolic rate). Your BMR is what your body needs to maintain normal functions like breathing, digestion, etc.
Calculate your activity level. Use a calorie calculator to figure out how many calories you burn while sitting, standing, exercising, lifting weights, etc. throughout the day.
Keep track of how many calories you eat. Use a food journal to add up what you eat and drink during the day. If you're eating less calories than you're burning, you'll lose weight.
Example:

Mary's BMR is 1400 calories and she burns 900 calories in daily activity. To maintain her weight, she should be eating 2300 calories but, after keeping a food journal, Mary finds that she's eating 2550 calories every day. By eating 250 more calories than her body needs, Mary will gain one pound every 2 weeks.
This example shows how easy it is to gain weight without even knowing it. But it's also easy to lose weight. In fact, you can start losing weight right now by making a few simple changes. If you can burn an extra 500 calories each day, you'll lose a pound a week and you won't even have to change your clothes. Try these ideas:

Instead of....
Having an afternoon Coke
Eating an Egg McMuffin
Using your break to catch up on work or eat a snack
Hitting the snooze button
Watching television after work

Do this...
Drink a glass of water. (calories saved: 97)
Eat a small whole wheat bagel +1 tbls of peanut butter (calories saved: 185)
Walk up and down a flight of stairs for 10 minutes (calories burned: 100)
Get up 10 minutes early and go for a brisk walk (calories burned: 100)

Do 10 minutes of yoga (calories burned: 50)

Total Calories Saved: 532 (based on a 140-lb person)

Focusing on daily changes is the best way to reach your goals. No, you won't lose weight overnight but isn't it better to permanently change your life for the better? Say it with me: My Health Is More Important Than My Appearance. Repeat that 10 times a day and you're on your way to better health.

Top weight loss tips

Today there is too much information available on losing weight that has become more confusing and sometimes difficult to follow. It’s actually very easy to lose weight if you follow my weight loss tips.

* Be in right frame of mind
Before you can start any diet program you need to be in the right frame of mind. If you do not feel good about yourself you probably will not want to choose healthy foods. You cannot expect the act of going on a diet to make you feel better about yourself. The only way you can choose to eat a healthy diet to lose weight is if you have a positive self-image.

* Eat whole food
Top weight loss tips
Eat whole foods that are as natural as possible. When you eat whole foods that are full of nutrients your body will know how much to eat and how much not to eat. You do not have to count calories because your body is a wonderful machine.

* Eat fresh fruit
Eat at least two servings of fresh fruit every day. Choose whatever type of fruit is in season.

* Drink enough water
Drink the best weight loss supplement known to man, water. Most people do not know the difference from being hungry for food or thirsty for water. A great deal of times people eat when they should drink. Most likely you will not feel as hungry if you are getting enough water. You will be satisfying the thirst, which is confused for hunger. Water also helps you digest food better. Drinking water before you eat will help fill you up.

* Always chew your food
Always chew your food well. Chewing your food well will ensure that you get the most nutrients out of your food. Getting the most nutrients will satisfy your body therefore you will eat less. Another benefit of chewing well is that it helps aid in digestion.

* Take small meals
Eat small, frequent meals in a day. Large meals tax your digestion system, making it work harder. Taking too much time in between meals makes you hungrier for the next meal.

* Include protein at meal
Include good sources of protein at meal, chicken, fish, legumes, peanut, cottage cheese, eggs or yogurt.

* Shut off TV while eating
Shut off the TV whenever you eat – that includes meals and snacks. Studies show that we automatically eat larger portions when we snack in front of the tube, and typically those foods are high in fat and sugar, which means excess calories!

* Increase your physical activity
Increase your physical activity. Most people are over weight because of a lack of physical activity. Start walking more, bicycling, walks your dog for longer periods of time, swim, dance and leave the car at home when you can. It’s important that you choose a physical activity that you enjoy because you’ll stick with it.

The following healthy living recommendations will help you if you’re trying to lose weight, tone up your muscles, have aspirations of building lean muscle mass, are attempting to get a wash board stomach, or just want to feel better:

*1) Burn more calories then you're consuming everyday and measure your results using the following formula: Calories Consumed minus Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) minus Physical Activity minus the Thermic Effect of Food (TEF). A website that explains this formula in more detail and will help you determine how many calories you need to reach or maintain a certain weight is at http://www.primusweb.com/fitnesspartner/library/weight/calsburned.htm

Get an online, desktop, or cell phone diet and fitness calculator. This will allow you to easily calculate the above formula, set goals, log your daily calorie consumption, and register your physical activities.

Set realistic goals for your ideal body weight. Here are two websites that will calculate a suggested body weight:
Adults: http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm
Teens/Children: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/exercise/weight/bmi.html

It is difficult and unhealthy to lose more than one or two pounds per week. There are 3,500 calories in a pound. If you eat 500 fewer calories per day for a week you will lose one pound. If you burn through exercise 500 more calories per day for a week you will lose one pound.

Here are two articles on how to break through a weight loss plateau:
http://www.webmd.com/content/article/86/99147.htm

*2) Eat natural and organic foods found on earth versus something created by a corporation to make money. Eat meals in small portions throughout the day and take a good multi-vitamin supplement.

Do not try fad diets or diet pills. Avoid “High Glycemic Load Carbs” (sugar, pastries, desserts, refined starches such as breads, pasta, refined grains like white rice; high starch vegetables such as potatoes) and drink lots of water. Read this article for more information on high GL Carbs:

*4) Get plenty of sleep. Sleep experts say most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night for optimum performance, health, and safety.

*5) Educate yourself continually on health issues and make a life long commitment to good health. A great free publication is “Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005”. A reputable test you can take to measure your biological age is at http://realage.com
Look at all areas where you can enhance your health. For example, make improvements in the quality of the air you breathe. Review outdoor air quality forecasts where you live and get an indoor air purifier.
