In order to install on XP my first machine, I added 128 MB memory to my original 64 MB of memory (totaling 192 MB) with a 450 MHz processor .

I ran into a problem with memory load while using AOL 9.0 and had to delete this and go to v7.0.

Yes, you can run near the minimum requirements, but your computer may be sluggish and may not run certain programs.

These are the minimum hardware requirements for Windows XP according to Microsoft.

PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

• 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

• 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*

• Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor

• CD-ROM or DVD drive

• Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

The miimum is 128, but it can run using 64MB with issues. However from experience i've seen that minimum is more realistically 256MB as the minimum doesn't really include everything XP will put in to run your computer, also whatever extra programs you may install afterwards.

If you are purchasing new memory i'd say go with atleast 512MB.

minimum USEFUL requirement would be 512MB.

I would try and get even more if you can afford it.
I think it can run on 128MB but it may take 2-days to type and send an e-mail. In other words it will be so slow as to be almost useless.
The more RAM you have the FASTER it runs and the more programs you can have open and running at the same time.

I recommend a min. of 256 and preferred at least 512 MB. XP can get very sluggish without a decent amount of Ram. I never have a problem with 512 running a normal amount of multiple programs.

microsoft recommend 64mb ram to run windows, but this is much too small for realistic users,256mb is a good amount as you will get applications running smoother and better
i find that 512mb is a good allround ram for xp,and with this amount you are ready to start the next program straight away

You probably don't want the minimum. 512 is the sweet spot for using any applications that tax the system.
