I have had similar experiences, and was lucky enough to be able to get through it without therapy or drugs. Most of my mental problems stemmed from external factors, so I can often minimise the problem by trying to trace it back to something external -- perhaps I said something stupid that I can't change, or someone reacted badly towards me, etc.
And then there are chemical imbalances. Sometimes it is possible to identify a chemical imbalance as a trigger of depression (i.e. during PMS or following drug use), which can help you realise that it won't last forever, it's not necessarily your fault, and if you hang on and get through it you'll be ok. More severe chemical imbalances may necessitate the use of antidepressants -- if you need these, make sure you know what you are taking. Don't let them experiment on you -- I have heard of cases where clinical depression was treated with anti-psychotic medicine; the results were not fun.
If you do end up taking antidepressants, always communicate with your doctor and follow their instructions. They can monitor your dosage based on your feedback and ensure that it's correct. They also know the correct ways to take you off the medicine if you need to stop taking it (i.e. if you need to travel to a country where your medicine is illegal). Don't make sudden, unauthorised changes, or go cold turkey, or you could put yourself at serious risk.
Remember that you are your own person -- the way you feel right now and the way other people feel (i.e. family members) doesn't say anything about how you will feel for ther rest of your life. Maybe, when your circumstances change, you will have less negative and limiting factors, and you will feel healthier and more optimistic about life.
Try to keep active and learn new things. Your brain will release more endorphins, and you should start to feel better about yourself (because of the increased endorphin supply, and because you'll be able to do stuff you couldn't do before). Actively seek out solutions to long standing problems which may be prolonging your condition.

If you want to talk and if you can trust me, I'll listen. I know a thing or two about depression for no reason and suicidal thoughts. But honey, first of all, sort out what's making you feel this way.
Last summer I literally went half insane with things I was asking that had no answers. I was also starting a new school which meant that my mental preoccupation didn't do me much good in the new environment, and a huge misunderstanding started and got so bad I was crying on the first weekend (I never cry about social stuff.) and was actually scared to go back to school. Afterwards I managed to stop thinking about stuff that depressed me, but I was still depressed until Chinese New Year...it was one of my friends who shook me out of it, I can't explain how she did it because it wasn't different to all the other efforts my other friends gave, but it just worked there and then. From then on, I was back to (or on my way back to) my "old" self. But hey, it's a learning experience okay? You just got to deal with it and let yourself flow with it for a while but NEVER to the extent that it messes up your entire life because that's just too hard to clear up. Focus on something, turn into a nerd, whatever. Something positive, anything to take your mind off it. Exercise so you sleep better. ANYTHING, whatever. Just do you don't have time and energy to dwell on what's bothering you. Then you move away and see if time favours you enough to work its trick.
You might not need treatment, just a ear. I'm a girl by the way. =) Good luck. It takes time. Just don't take negative action.

It depends on what your depression is stemming from. Some situations can be further avoided or changed. Instead of looking for a long term solution take it day by day. I do recommend the use of anti depressants because they can be extremely useful. Support groups are also useful

Can take some time to recover 1-2 years. Anti-depressants and therapy. Anti-depressants work quickly and you feel better quite soon but you may need to try different ones because not all are suitable for any given individual.
