It depends on whether you're exhibiting abilities of a Dream Clairvoyant or if you've had something in your past that is manifesting itself in your dreams.
If you're a Dream Clairvoyant, it means that you've got an open connection. When you're asleep, your Subconscious is picking up thoughts running off the Electromagnetic Field.
Sometimes violent thoughts in nightmares could be from someone who's experiencing a certain level of Psychic Abilities and picking up other people's thoughts.
Regardless of whether you're Psychic or not, you can actually create a Mental Firewall to block out those thoughts or you can use a method of deconstructing your nightmares to break the cycle with the dreams you're having.
The way to break those violent thoughts is by changing the definitions or symbols. If you pay close attention to how those people are dying in your nightmares, you can redefine the objects that you see in your dream.
There have been cases where some objects provided by the Subconscious Mind really mean something else. However, it uses a violent explanation because it's the only way it can convey what it's trying to say to you.
The other cause of violent thoughts in dreams is where the people symbolize variations of you or loved ones and your Subconscious is using a "dramatic" explanation through use of violence.
Sometimes Death of characters in a dream is referring to the end of an idea or concept that has taken physical form. If the people who are dying in your nightmares are familiar faces such as loved ones, family members, and friends, it may referring to those attributes those familiar people symbolize to you.
If they're strangers, you may need to define more specifically what the symbolism is behind those violent deaths.

I would think you have a lot of anxiety about something, or there is something disturbing going on in your life, maybe an unresolved conflict. Try reading something mild before sleep, and/or listening to some relaxing music. Also, make sure you get some exercise earlier in the day.

Dreams are usually your subconscious way of acting out whats "really" going on with you. Many emotional problems are faced when we dream.

Teach yourself to lucid dream. once you are capable of that you can change whats happening in your dream. Take it another direction, or confront whatever fear you're experiencing.
