Well to be quite honest, you probably have more of a chance tracking down, her roots than your own, as with geneaology there is either a 50, 75 or 99 year rule in regards to privacy and not allowing people to see information regarding people that may still be alive, i guess it really depends on whether you have a name, (as in who adopted her and from where) approximate date of adoption and or birth and from what country and or state, these things should give you a good start as to where to start looking for the information.

don't be so quick to shy away. There are still records. The geneaology library maintained by the LDS (Mormon) Church has an extensive library of resources. I am not LDS, but live in Utah and am aware of many things that they have accomplished. They are most willing to help people even if they are not Mormon. If nothing else, they could give you some pointers on how to go about your search. Good luck and have fun

if she was born before the modern era, you could check church and hospital/doctors records inthe town where she was born/grew up. If you have acess to old family bibles, you may find info. Also check county records where she was born or spent childhood.
i heard somewhere that the salvation army helps people find adoptive records.

If you know her original last name it's actually quite possible in most states. Many states have archives or records of families etc. etc. that are compiled by genoligist i think. But yeah; it should be possible if you have her original last name. I know Rhode Island has like a family tracking thing, but idk about anywhere else lol
