Don't know much about boxing, but I do know alot about the Russian athletic system. Under Communism, the Russian government in their quest for superiority in every field of endeavor to prove their system "better", extensively tested children. They identified at a very early age those that would excel in various fields, including sports. They started training them when they were elementary school age. They got only rudimentary educations in school subjects, but extensive training in their sport. When Communism collapsed in the USSR, the Russian government, to a more limited extent, continued the system. They choose to concentrate in a few areas, like boxing, gymnastics, weight lifting and winter sports. But this is why, in certain areas, Russians are overwhelmingly superior.

The Chinese still continue this system, sending very small children to gymnastics schools, watersports schools, etc. Which is why you are beginning to see more & more Chinese medalists in the summer games.

1. A lot of the young American heavyweights lack discipline. In Russia boxing is a golden ticket that will get you out of the poor house. And believe it or not, a Russian poor house is a hell a lot worse than an American poor house.
2. Most of our young disciplined great athletes are going into the NBA & NFL.

And Rachman will always be overrated because he knocked the hell out of Lewis.

The Eastern European Fighters are fighting with alot more experience than many give them due to the fact that most of them are from poor villages that are on the edge of survival. But there is hope for the United States besides Rahman and it comes in the form of Calvin Brock who I belive can beat Klitchko and Mascieve

The best in the amateur ranks though has to go to the Cubans. And like someone mentioned we have so many sports that are greatest athletes go to the major sports.
There is a rise in interest in boxing though. That kid from Notre Dame--plays DB, with a Polish name--looks like he's gonna be a good one.

i wouldn't say they're better....better trained perhaps. since ali and tyson, the heavyweight division has just been so lame, shallow in talent, and dull. in such a void, the russian mentality of professionalism and preparation rises. hopefully, soon, there'll be a worthy american(hopefully more so we can re-initiate rivalries) heavyweight, who actually trains and maintains a realistic weight, who will "represent" and win back our rightful place in boxing!
