If you want some semi-scientific (I don't have all the facts) input, there is some sort of phenomenon that happens to the nerves in your retinas during such experiences, when you're very close to death. I guess it has to do with either the nerve cells or brain cells dying. This can explain people seeing bright lights during that time. As for the demons, those could have been spots where vision had faded completely. Coupled with the person's beliefs, teachings, or surroundings (a Christian country), he may have interpretted them to be figures of demons.
Also consider that if a doctor is testing your state of consciousness, one thing he/she does is shine a light in your eyes to test the dilation of your pupils (nonresponsive pupils = bad news). That could be the proverbial white light. As for the red, they have a bright light over the table. If your eyes are closed, that light would appear red because of the blood vessels in your eyes. As for the light with red clouds, that could be accounted for if his eyes were stuck partially open.
And no, I've never met anyone who had a near death experience. Actually, I might have. I had a really bad infection and was in the hospital for a while. I didn't know how bad it was, but afterwards my parents told me that I was sick to the point that they were extremely worried about how it would turn out. I never got to the brink though, so I guess that doesn't count in this context.

hello I died for a couple minutes. I saw what I believe is heaven although I've never doubted its existence.
there is no tunnel. but there is a lot of light coming from the floor and the horizon is something like clouds but not like on earth something really weird and hard to explain.
the time moves in a different way than in earth. actually you can control the flow of time.
there are other humanlike creatures.
and it was certainly nothing like earth. Probably nothing like anywhere in this universe. Probably something like an upper dimension.
after seeing the hole place I went to some "people" that looked at me strangely and told me I shouldn't be there then I was sent back after a short conversation.
I sadly don not know who the "people" were as I was told I won't remember much of them :(.

Well, in school we learned that the human brain continues to dream for up to 6 months after death. Also I've heard speculation that the bright light comes from brain cells dying. But, who can say for sure? There seems an awful lot of people who have seen these such things maybe it is real.
One thing I do know is this... When I find out for sure, I won't be able to give you an answer unless and until you already know too.

what your friend experience is not true because he almost died, he didnt died. these experiences comes after death.
do hell and heaven really exist? whats the proof?.
a person comes to you and he claims that hell and heaven exist will you believe that. you will if he gives you proof. we the muslims have been given the proof of its existence. The Quran. The Quran challange the whole human kind to bring a book similiar to it if you think its not from Allah. so far the best arabic scholars could not do this so we cannot do this. the challange stands today and so should the fact that God is one, Muhammad is the Prophet of God and god is the Creater of hells and heavens

i gotta disagree with "jumpingrightin" cause Fuddruckers sucks and is expensive, you should have said something more like, "Hell is eternal seperation from God, and Heaven is eternity with God"....that would make more sense....oh and to answer this question....In New Testament class, you should learn about ol Lazarus and the rich man.....that's a good clue to what Hell will be like....as for ol Joe Shmo that thought he saw Hell...i had a dream one time that i was going to iraq to fight in the war and in my dream there was grass and flowers and water and people sitting around a campfire singing David Crowder songs....turns out it was just a dream....ol Joe Shmo was probably just having a dream

What's the first thing medical personel do to an unconscious person? They shine a BRIGHT light into their eyes. Combine this with the subconscious mind still functioning, and you can explain most, if not all near death experiences.

I don't think I was close to death, unless it was heat stroke or something, but I got real hot outside in the heat, and fainted, and this had never happened to me before. But while I was "out"...I felt TOTAL peace, I mean it felt like utopia. And I saw and heard a female voice like an angels....and brightness, and there was no doctor shining lights in my face...
