I think everyone has issues about taking anything for the mind. The brain is an organ too and if any of your other organs werent working the way they should, your parents probably wouldnt protest medication for it.
I also think that Drs are too quick to just write out a prescription for depression and don't put enough effort into the cause of it. Prayer is good, and it will help you but it might not be all you need. Do find someone that you can at least talk to that wont just say "Pray!" someone who will understand it like any other medical condition.

Don't drink. At 13 it's too early. Wait a few years. You will have opportunities in high school and in college. It's not cool and if you have too much it's not fun at all. You brain is not fully developed yet and alcohol can really damage an undevloped brain. Your ability to learn and rememer are affected as well as decision making skills even when you are not drunk. It's to big af price to pay. Cutting yourself is anthor issue altogether. You need to talk to comeone about this. If it' a problem at home, which is common in the teenage years, talk to a counloror teacher or someone you trust at school, work, church, community orginations, where ever. See if you can see a thearipist. You may have an unresolved issue. I have unresolved issue's from my childhod and I am just now working on them. It is alot of work but I feel so much better for having done it. By the way I am 41. Please save yourself from alot of pain and deal with this now. Trust me you will be glad you did.

By "strong Christian" you mean ultra-fundamental. Praying is great! Praying can accomplish amazing things. But God gave us all gifts. To some, he gave a mind for medicine and healing. It seems wrong to refuse to accept a solution that has been provided by God.
My background is in psychology and counseling. I've only had one class is psychopharmacology, but I understand the basics of how those meds work. They're a bit harsh on the system, so in that respect, I'd advise you to investigate other alternatives first. (Most of them make you so nauseous you can't eat for a few days.) Is there a pastor or teacher you can talk to? Sometimes just having somebody like that to listen can help you figure out the cause of your feelings. But if meds what will help you feel better, that's what you need to do. Hang in there!

Depression and anxiety, when truly present are evidence of a biochemical imbalance in the brain, which is not correctable "through prayer" or "mind over matter", alone. That's where the medication to correct the imbalance comes in. However, prayer and counsel, recreation and socialization are key to keeping the correct balance in place once the medication has begun to do it's job. Your family needs to educate themselves on the subject. Depression and anxiety are not just "mental" issues, or spiritual ones, but very real physical problems that only a doctor or psychiatrist is qualified to dispense the physical solution to.

This is an illness, NOT a character flaw. If it were a character flaw then the medications wouldn't help. Also, it is absolutely IMPERATIVE that you receive treatment as soon as possible so that the illness doesn't worsen (which is what happens with time). It's called EARLY INTERVENTION. Pls. Read below:
"What is Teen Depression?
Most of us feel sad or unhappy at various times in our life, but teenage depression that extends for a longer lengths of time (usually more than 2 weeks) and that interferes with our daily life is considered to be major depression. This type of teen depression is one that isn't to be taken lightly and should be treated as early as possible to prevent further problems.
Studies and statistics show that approximately 1 in 8 adolescents may be suffering from depression, a very scary statistic. Even more frightening is that only about 30% of these children who are suffering emotional/mental turmoil are receiving any treatment for it…
Major adolescent depression, if left untreated, will rarely go away on it's own. Relapses are extremely common and should always be prevented. Other forms of mental health illnesses are more common as well in depressed teens. If teens are left without help, they may decide to take things into their own hands. They can turn to alcohol and/or drug abuse to help make their pain go away. At it's worst, teen depression can lead to suicide. According to www.teendepression.org, teen suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among young people ages 15-24. We must all do our part in preventing these outcomes as best we can. Early intervention is key. Watch for those warning signs and if observed, seek the necessary help right away."

this is a hard question to answer.... I believe God created every living thing for a reason Plants, flowers, you name it God created it..... I believe God has given us doctors and medications to help us. But people abuse these things... if you mom had a heart attack and had to take med's for that what would she think? God is an awsome God..... But if you are strugling, then seek a physician with christian morals and talk to them and seek a professionals opinion that is a christian. I am a dedicated christian, but when my brother was killed i had to go on meds for a short while, and it helped me...Nothing habit forming, just something to help me..... I personally find nothing wrong with it.... I will be praying for you and for God to release the depression from you.... And the anxiety..... God Bless

I think it is fine to take medications as long as you are cautious. Are her objections based on a religious belief or is she just worried about the medical aspect? I can't think of any religious reason but there are some medical dangers that need to be considered very seriously. Do some homework. And either way, prayer is always a good idea.

I have a panic/anxiety disorder also. As a christian I tried praying about it and gettin through it w/out drugs but I was told God helps those who help themselves. I only took meds for a short time till I got through it and now only as needed. I trust in God to keep me from depression as much as possible but when it happens I know he gave someone the smarts to make the meds for me to take.
