Native americans beyond family have not had any cohesive rolemodels since they encountered the american culture, thus keeping apart, unlike every other culture group involved in the taming of a wild land. Bears the size of two men were often encountered and the native americans rarely killed them while the invading culture had a hugh european culture to delight with Beaver, buffalo, and new gemstones were embolden to decimate everything. The Native americans were the first to experience Post Tramatic Stress Disorder and could not make a valid stand against or with such awesomness. They had to be extremely intelligent to survive without upsetting the natural order of life. Yet they still come out on the short end. Read "I buried my heart at wounded Knee" to get more insight into this complex issue. Dennis Means is still in jail, 25 years later, many think because he is a role model. I live a few miles west of where the Ghost Dancers originated, and this form of cultural reawakening was outlawed because it does not promote blending into the existing power structure. That too many end their lives wrapped around liquor is heartbreaking and also how you have gotten such messages.
I once took a week long fire fighting training with fifty members of the local tribe, and I had to ask the instructors to clarify everything constantly because the culture of the Native american does not promote question asking. That not a single tribal member failed the class that year was because the instructors loved to clarify when asked. (That I was 42 and a rookie was only appreciated by the Senior instructor who was retiring in three years at 45.) Anyway, I lived in a small town for a summer where the only local entertainment was watching the Native Americans get drunk on the weekends. Sometimes we can help others and sometimes the PTSD won't let anything change to the better.

If by "Indians" you're refering to Aboriginal or Native Americans:

That mindset was the approach for quite a long time when colonization first started. What most schools don't teach about Columbus was that, upon arriving in North America, he was greeted in a welcoming way by the First People. Promptly after, he wrote in his journal that there weren't that many of them and that overpowering and overtaking them wouldn't be too much effort at all! He even kidnapped a group of people to bring back as slaves to Europe, though most died on the ship back.

Anyway, this patronizing stance continued for many centuries. In the States, there were a number of massacres to try to eradicate the people all together. In Canada, assimilation was key.

Today it's not as bad, but I'd say not good enough. People have been ingrained with the European side of the story in books and schools, and forget that many of the social problems First Nations/Native American cultures face is because of the way their accepted ways of living were forcibly changed. As well, it's important to know that these changes haven't gone away - in Canada, for ex, they continue to dictate a large part of every day life, because of the treaties signed that confined Aboriginals to reserves, etc.

I believe that you are talking about the American Indian so I will reply accordingly. I sat next to an American Indian in college (I forget tribe) and he was a whiz!!! We were studying math and he had answers before I could place the pencil to the paper. He was also great on Comparative Anatomy and History. Indians are as smart as white men if they go to school and learn the things that make people smart. Indians are good fathers and mothers and believe in a great spirit in the sky.

What indians are you talking about? The India Indians or the Native American Indians?

I don't think any of them are more brainless than others... just depends on the individual and if they persue anything that'll help them progress or not.
