Is it ok to drop the ball behind the water or do you have to tee the shot up again from the tee box? I am just learning to play so I am not sure how I am suppose to be playing this. Thanks for your answers. I know you have to take a one stroke penalty.

you actually may have three choices depending on the type of water hazard you hit into:

(a) Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played; or

(b) Drop a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped; or

(c) As additional options available only if the ball last crossed the margin of a lateral water hazard, drop a ball outside the water hazard within two club-lengths of and not nearer the hole than (i) the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard or (ii) a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole.

You can either:
-Take a drop at a spot farther from the pin from where the ball landed in the water

or

-Take a rehit, which is also a 1 shot penalty, but is sometimes more desireable.

If that's a lateral danger, you have 4 concepts,; if that's a popular danger you have 3 concepts. In all circumstances, you would be pealized one million shot, till you're stupid adequate to play out of the possibility(no penalty).
