Cats don't get enough protein when they eat dog food. Same with dogs eating cat food, they get to much. Feed separately. This information told to me by vet when he learned my dog was eating Happy Cat

Cat food needs to be extremely high in protien, as cats are complete carnivores - in the wild all they would eat is protien. Dogs on the other hand, are more like us, they can eat other foods, and would do so in the wild. Your cat needs to be kept away from the dogs food, as it's got waaay too many carbohydrates in it. The Atkins diet may be controversial for people, but for cats - it's the way to go. You need to get your cat onto the highest protein cat food you can afford. You will find that once he's on this, he will actually start eating less, as protien fills you up a lot quicker than carbs. What you should also do is to substitute around two to three dinners a week with raw chicken/rabbit (yes, the chicken is a little easier to get hold of!) He may not take well to the raw meat, as they are usually such creatures of habit, but if on the days you are feeding him raw meat, keep his pellets away, he'll be plenty hungry when its time for dinner.
Of course, the last thing that will help out is getting him off his big hairy butt and exercising more!

you need to feed them seperatly, the cat is just getting too much to eat, calling him names wont help, you can buy lower calorie food for older cats.
