Okay...I live in the Southern Tier of New York and I have been searching for a Child Care Center for 2 weeks with reasonable rates and they are telling me that reasonable in $168-$210 a week for and infant and $95-$125 for a school aged child. Are these people crazy? If I go to work or back to school that is all of my income just to child care. Is this crazy or am i just over reacting?

You are not crazy!! I live in a very small poor town in Arkansas and even here the rates are astronomical! I'm talking 90-110 per week for an infant and 60-75 per week for school age. I have it figured out though, it's called supply and demand! One thing to think about thought, open your own daycare!!

when you break it down it's around $5/hour (based on 8 hr day) for an infant, and much less for an older child... so actually, it is not that much to ask, in my opinion. i mean, you know the amount of work that goes into each hour of caring for an infant. i think i'd be scared if someone was only charging me $2/hour to care for my beloved child. however, i totally cannot afford it myself (where i live it is much more expensive than what you have been quoted) and am very lucky to have arranged something with my s.o. which allows us to alternate childcare and work schedules. i hope you find something that works for you.. good luck!

ps - i just looked at your previous question about breastfeeding. check out this month's babytalk magazine for statistics (or go to babytalk.com - very controversial cover but i think it is GREAT!). if you are still interested in how many people on this site breastfeed, here is a recent question i answered...

Well, it is extremely crazy. My husband and I just decided that it made sense for me to stay home because daycare would have taken up my whole check.

They charge that much because that's how much it costs to feed, entertain, educate children.
