What are the general traditions behind engagement and wedding rings? How much, what kind, etc.

Thanks steph... now any more answers that aren't out of some cheesy romance novel and actually apply in the real world? A ring of appropriate cost says 'you're worth every cent I spent on this'. That other 'it doesn't matter to true love' stuff is crap - if it's true love, you're willing to spend what you're meant to on it.

There is really no traditional cost to purchasing wedding or engagement rings. That two or three month salary thing was actually a marketing ploy started in the past decade by De-beers. Just buy whatever you like no matter the cost. Sit down at the jewelers and pick the rings that you wont mind wearing everyday for the rest of your life and don't go by a standard from anyone else on what you should spend because that's bogus information.

Engagment rings are basically a contract between the guy and the girl. Guy is saying he intends to marry the girl. That's why if he breaks up with her, she gets to keep the ring, but if she breaks up with him she has to give it back. The wedding ring is then the sealing the deal, if you will.
As to style, it all depends on what the two of you want. I wanted s solitare round cut diamond, because that's how I see the "traditional" engagement ring. Some women want 3 stone rings, or a different cut. Pricing can change so much depending on where you go, so don't use that as a basis. It'd be better to get a smaller stone with better clarity than a bigger stone with more flaws in it.
Here's what we said in our wedding vows for the exchanging of the rings:

I offer you this ring as a symbol of my enduring love.
I ask that you take it and wear it so that all may know you are touched by my love.
With this ring, I give you my promise that from this day forward, you shall never walk alone. My heart will be your shelter, my arms will be your home. We will walk together through life as partners and best friends. I promise that I shall always do my best to love you and accept you exactly as you are. With this ring, I give you your freedom and my trust in you. I give you my heart until the end of time. I have no greater gift to give.

Tom, please take Becka's engagement ring. This ring is the symbol of promise and intention. Now the intention is realized and the promise fulfilled. Please place the ring on Becka's finger over her wedding band to symbolize that the love which brought you together will always protect and sustain your marriage.

They say engagement rings are supposed to be 3 months salary but many choose to save that 3 months salary for life with the person you intend to marry. I don't know about the wedding band tho. good luck to ya and your intended. Steph

I don't believe that there is any tradition in engagement ring. Just buy something that suit her. True love doesn't measure by how much a carat of diamond ring you going to buy for her. Its the sincerity when you present the proposal to her. If she is true to you, and can feel your sincerity, no matter what ring you buy her, she will appreciate and treasure it for the rest of her life. cheers. good luck
