How can so many people ignore science when it conflicts with their religious convictions... So many people use the Bible (a book written by men) as their primer to the natural world... They think that Dinosaurs are a hoax, that Man came from Mud, and that the physical laws of the universe are simply wrong when it conflicts with their religion. Why is that? I have seen so many people respond to the "theory of evolution" by saying it is just a "Theory" Not knowing that in science a theory - is a set of conjectures that have stood up to repeated testing and for which there is no other reasonable explanation... Gravity is just a theory... but I have never heard anyone argue for intelligent falling.... Why is this?

Creationism is a supposition, it can not be tested and exists outside the scientific method... If there was science involved I would say ok, good theory... But having a theory that exists because no one wants to look further into it... "How can there not be a god" is not a proof for god

Skerry Kerry - you are wrong, gravity IS a theory.

Newton came up with two LAWS (universal gravitation and Gravitational Potential) that are a portion of the overall THEORY of gravity. This theory falls apart at infinite density (black holes and singularities) and also does not hold water when compated to certain quantum principals.... ---there are many theories on gravitational principals... dont preach ignorance to me... This is a legitimate question... Many people ignore science...

As for the laws of thermodynamics... you are refering to the 2nd law of thermo dynamics, (and you are wrong on that two... you are mistranslating the law and that is not a solid proof)... just an fyi

Why not actually look into the science you so casualy cast aside

Earl D -

That was a thorough answer filled with vitriol... I think what you thorough explained is how we learn more an adjust our views to accomodate new information... tahts exactly what my question is about... the majority of people who have answered so far have said that the refuse to refine their views... they refuse to adjust there perspective because the bible has and always will be the true answer... But the Christian faith has changed numerous times, and there are many differing teachings and schools of thought, from baptist, to methodist, to catholics, etc... everyone has a slightly different take on the same book...

The faith that was taught by the catholic church sure seemed to change when Martin Luther nailed that little document to the door, dont ya think... that whole reformation (REFORMATION) was a big change to christianity.

I guess science in your mind hasnt reformed existing theories, but has instead taken complete 180 degree turns, huh?

One minute appliances are running on electricity, and the next minute there is no such thing... Oh, and the particle colliders and change matter into energy... that whole teaching still holds true... there isnt a complete anhialation of matter it is transitioned from one state to another...

I assure you that I will not appear to be a "wichdoctor" To my grandkids... science is not my god, but i do rely on observation to gauge my reality...

People often are afraid of what they cannot explain. Many Christians take the Bible to be a scientific book, this is obviously false. The sole purpose of the Bible is to tell about God, and how to follow him. If one were to assume that both science and the Bible are true, then logically, they must agree. The problem you are referring to arises when people take the Bible literally, and view it as a scientific book. The Bible, when taken for its intended purpose does not, in any way, conflict with scientific explanations. Only the arrogance and ignorance of those individuals would cause them to ignore scientific evidence, and assume that the Bible necisarily excludes science .

Careful now.

If you have kept up with what is happening in the world of archeology, you will find that there is more and more scientific and archeological evidence that supports what occurred in the Bible.

In fact, there has been enough scientific evidence that my oldest brother, a hard core science computer tech person, is now turning from being agnostic to believing in God and Jesus and The Holy Spirit.

People, people, people. Read a little before jumping in and use some common sense...
And Gravity? It is a reality, the mathematical equations are what is called a theory.
Does the theory of "Organized Chaos" true? How would you proove it?

How about faith. How would you scientifically give proof that the more a person says prayers means he or she has faith? As an example. OR...Why is it that people who use prayer in a hospital setting heal faster than people who do not?

A theory is a number of separate hypotheses that lead to a logical conclusion and/or reasoning. There are always problems with theories only because human beings are not perfect. If we were, we'd live in a perfect world and have perfect hypotheses that lead down the same perfect path to the perfect conclusion which makes up a theory...circular thinking

Two reasons: first, many people tend to misinterpret the Bible, not accounting for cultural forms of writing, science at the time of the writings, figures of speech, etc.

Second, many people rely so completely on science that unless there's cold hard proof, they refuse to entertain other thoughts. (Kind of a wonder they can pick something from a menu.)

Between the two, there's a big gray area. I'm in there. I don't see very many discrepencies between science and my faith. In fact, science has made discoveries that support it.

The most responsible thing is to recognize that - yes, theories are just theories and they're the best man-made explanation we have right now. I would argue that a true scientist would allow for all options, natural and supernatural, and most do, while most average people don't. People tend to be more comfortable with absolutes. But you're right, it's ignorant and irresponsible to pretend that real facts don't exist just to accomodate a belief.

Personally, if the facts don't fit my faith, then it's time to readjust my faith!

It is a school subject so, it's just a subject. While in reality, bible was made by men yes. But did you know that those men who wrote it are years away from each other and yet the bible is the most consistent book there is. The explanation is simple God gave His spirit while men are writing His words to ensure precision and truth. With the dinosaur thing, God didn't put it in the bible because it's not important, for Him you are important (people). About the theory, are all theories correct? No, right. And for the information of all Darwin apologized that his theory is not true. YES, that's the whole truth that his colleagues hindered not to let the people know! Shame on them.

I personally don't know any Christians who think dinosaurs are a hoax. That is something made up by some atheist to try and make us look bad. As far as evolution goes, the theory changes pretty often and there are several different versions and if we believe one version today we'll probably have to believe another version tomorrow and since none of us where there, none of us are going back to the beginning it is irrelevant ANYWAY so.... If we say "God created us" big deal. Science is useful and we all use it to some extent every, it isnt like we just reject everything science says, we actually listen but we know it will change and just dont base out lives on it like you do. Put your faith in man and you will always be disappointed.

Duh. Gravity is not a theory, it's a fact. Let me put a house over your head and drop it and I can prove it, over and over!

How can we ignore science. Let's start with Sigmud Freud, once the darling of Psychiatry. He founded it, by the way! Today ALL his theorys are wrong! They are not science they are witchcraft, yet in 1930 EVERY asylum was run by a Freudian!

What are you going to do on the day Science disowns Darwin!?

It could happen!

You do know, according to at least one source, that Darwin was a Racist who felt Black People came from inferior monkeys then white people!. He supposedly wrote this down and it is published.

How come Science has NEVER been able to put amino acids into a test tube, shake it up and make a virus?

How come the Big Bang theory sounds remarkably like Gensis, which was written 6,000 years ago by Jews!

I guess 6,000 year old Jews are far smater than scientists.

Go read Gensis and compare it to the BIG BANG.

TELL ME, genius, WHERE did all the MASS of the Universe COME FROM!?

Huh?

It was ALWAYS THERE AND ALWAYS WILL BE THERE.

Isn't that also the Religious definition of GOD?

Don't forget to take your umbrella tommorw, no matter what the weather man says. God may prove him wrong!

Oh and WHERE and WHEN will the BIG ONE HIT?

Afterall we ARE paying Seismoligists $100,000 to tell us this. We need more of an aswer then what religious zealots say for free when they say: The End of the World is coming Soon, be ready!

Boy, aren't there a lot of similarities between science and religion!

Oh and by the way. Every school child taught before 1975 knows Saturn is the ONLY ringed planet and JUPITER has 12 moons. Fred Hoyle, the major Genius in Astronomy, told us so.

Why are all his books now TOTALLY wrong?!

It's only been a few decades!

Gee, how FAST science changes it's mind on things.

Is Pluto a planet or not?!

It was a planet when I went to school.

And when I went to school MATTER could not be created nor destoryed, until they did it in a accelerator, then they changed their tunes on it all!

How can you beleive in something that changes it minds every 10 years!

Can't these high paid scienctsts get it right the first time!

And speaking of Dinsaurs, I grew up with the BRONTOSAURUS. Now it doesn't exist!

There was none, never was none.

Now we call it something else! Why!?

What was WRONG with BRONTOSAURUS!?

The Bront went extinct twice! Once a million years ago and again in 1985!

What happened there, Science guy!

Everything. Everything I learned in school science from 1962 to present day is NOW TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

That's 50 years! Science changed it's mind on EVERYTHING in 50 years!

Brovo! What a great thing to believe in! Science, the every chaning thing where tommorrow is different then was it was today!

Why did I bother going to school for 14 years to learn things that are now wrong and obsolete!

Why!

What is the purpose of TRAING kids to MEMORIZE these things! So you can pull the rug out from under them and make THEIR KIDS think MOM and DAD are morons!

And that's exactly what we are! We are obsolete moron's filled with knoweldge that is now exstinct in less than 50 years!

In 1955 they prescribed Penicillin for hangnails and common colds. Today, they don't prescribe it at all for fear it will kill you with adverse reactions or penacilianse that eats your flesh!

Remember YOU are the ONE that believes in the great god SCIENCE!

Maybe you have a false god and don't know it!

One day when you have grand kids and you spawn your wisdom and they laugh at you because you sound like a witch doctor, you will understand reality!

Face the ultimate reality. God has been around in print for 6,000 years. Jesus for 2,000 years. No one has made that many changes at all. Some one says one new source says the beast number is 616 not 666, and we give it a look.

But by and large, Religion has not changed much at all in 6,000 years! And people still hold to it, even Einstein and Hawkings give it a nod!

People will always have their beliefs. While we believe in Science and all of it's discoveries, others have been raised to believe in Religion since birth.

Religion is faith based. Science relies on experiments and real-life proofs. Even though I was raised to believe in Religion, I started asking questions once I grew older. I came to the conclusion that Religion cannot be proven, while Science can, and I would rather believe in something concrete.

Intelligent Design is the result of a corrupt education system. Separation of Church and State would dictate that Religion should not be taught in schools. But parents and teachers and politicians and priests are afraid of letting kids learn about the factual world around them. They are afraid that kids will evolve away from religious, Biblical thinking. Sprinkles of Religion must be inserted into schools and schoolwork, otherwise our children may actually form their own opinion.

And as we all know, humans are supposed to be the sheep that follow the shepherd. We are not supposed to form our own intelligent opinions and question everything.

I am a Christian. I don't ignore science. I respect it. But as far as conflicts between my spiritual beliefs and science. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Faith is the substance if things hoped for and the evidence of things that are not seen. Faith's very definition makes it clear that scientific fact, theory, or reasonable explanation cannot cancel out what I believe.

im glad someone else knows what the word theory means in a scientific context, though gravity is a law, the theory of gravitation is what explains and describes this law. I dont know why religious people have selective acceptance of science, because they sure love it when it comes to computers and tv's.....it even says in the bible that god created plants on the fourth day and the sun and moon on the fifth....insane!

Um, there is the Law of Gravity. Ignorant people ignore what they don't want to believe, like the definition of a scientific theory. Heaven forbid they pick up a dictionary or encyclopedia or any book but the bible. Oh wait...
