well there are several possible reasons:
1] as boys we are raised to believe that the man should be successful and the provider in the relationship take care of the woman.
2] most men are insecure with themselves to allow a woman in thier life that is more successful then them, they feel it is an attack on thier manhood.
3] men do not like rejection and feel that a woman more successful then them is either out of there league or to proud to have thier ego bursted.

It's not so much about lovable and/or unlovable, is that everyone kinda likes to feel needed.
I think a lot of guys have, unfortunately, been raised around the older 'Chivalry' ethic, which says that guys have to look out for girls ('cuz that certainly hasn't been disproven a few billion times over...). It's somewhat pervasive in the media and the like, and is still seen as the standard of a 'good guy'.
So, basically, when a girl is self-sufficient, guys who buy into the chivalry concept are somewhat at a loss as to how they're still needed. Same reason as why some people (male and female) _like_ high-maintenance partners...it makes them feel needed.
I'm not saying it's right, that'd just be my best guess as to why we can sometimes seem less attracted to successful girls.
Hope that helps.
Oh, also there's always social stereotyping, saying we're supposed to feel embarrassed if we aren't the bread-winner in the family. I guess that could have an impact, too.

It's just the way some men are. I've gotten that before, but then there are guys that are turned on by it.
Just be yourself, enjoy your success, and don't bother wasting your time on anyone who doesn't appreciate your success!
