Lice are small , white, wingless insects about the size of tiny ants that live on the human body. The adult is called a louse and it's eggs are called nits.Nit picking then is the removal of the louse eggs. a tedious task since the nits are so small. There are 3 types of lice head , body, and crab..Head lice appear on the hairs of the head, behind the ears and on the neck. To check for head lice look through the hairs.lice or nits should be seen along the hair shafts.Body lice are rarely seen as they inhabit the seems and lining of clothing and move to the body only when feeding,Crab lice infest the groin and pubic area.
Lice suck blood. However it is their saliva and excretions which cause you to itch.Lice are spread by close contact with such things as car seats, coat racks, theatre seats, combs, sexual contact, and bedding,Head lice are very common in school children, since they are in such close contact. the main symptom of lice is itching. You should also be able to see the nits, which adhere to the hair shafts.

Home treatment:

Kwell, a prescription shampoo,is highly effective in getting rid of lice,Cuprex, RID,and A-200 Pyrinate, are over the counter remedies that will usually do the job. shampoo the entire family and cleaning clothing rugs and furniture and bedding thoroughly.

Call your Dr and get a prescription for Kwell shampoo. This is actually cheaper than Nix over the counter treatments. The Kwell will kill the lice but you have to remove every "nit" or egg that is attached to the child's hair. I always used a flash light and my fingernails because the combs they provide clog and leave the nits. They will glisten in the light so the flashlight makes them easier to see. Retreat in 3-7 days even if you don't see any signs. There always seems to be one or two you will miss.

You will also have to treat your house and everyone in the house. Lice is highly contagious. You have to treat your upholstery, mattresses and rugs with the lice control spray. You have to laundry all beddings and dry on high heat. Any stuffed animals can be placed in plastic bags for 14 days. Make sure they are air tight so the lice die in the bag. Then I would take the extra precaution of drying them in the dryer as well to remove any dead nits or lice that may be on them.

UGGGH! Have I been there before! Nix is a good product, but can cause terrible side effects. I used tea tree oil when my girls were little. The lice hate the smell, and it is an all natural product, VERY strong, so be careful. Just rub an amount the size of a quarter through the hair, cover it with a cap for about 20 minutes...OR put the plastic cap on and heat the hair with a blow dryer for about 10 minutes. Wash the hair and add a few drops of the tea tree oil to the conditioner, comb out and pick out the nits. Another tried and true remedy is white vinegar. They hate that too. You apply the vinegar straight and again, wrap the hair in a plastic cap or in saran wrap for 20 minutes to 30. The blow dryer is a HUGE help, they can't deal with heat!!!
MOST IMPORTANTLY you have to wash EVERYTHING your daughter's head has come in contact with in VERY VERY HOT WATER, bedding; clothing; stuffed animals; pillows; hats; scarves; I mean everything; and then spray the family furniture with either RID spray, or a mixture of tea tree oil and water. The RID spray is actually faster, the oil is safer though. Everything has to go into a hot dryer too after washing. We have had kids in our school system who have had to cut and in worst cases, shave their heads because the lice epidemic was so bad. It is so nasty, and hard to get rid of. I feel for you. Best of luck. Nana

Using the nix is important but unfortunately won't solve the problem entirely, you should also mannually pick the nits out of her hair. You can also use a VERY fine tooth comb through her hair, combing through several times. Leave the nix in her hair for about 12hours. You might have to do the treatment a couple of times. Don't forget to sanitize her things. You can do this by washing them, OR using a HOT dryer, OR place things in a garbage bag (tied up for a few days). It also doesn't hurt to repeat the nix treatment after about a week to make sure everything is really out. Good luck!

NIX is a good product, but just because you put it on doesn't mean that there gone just like that. You should use a mental comb not the plastic one that it come with it will hurt alot more.
you should also try using alcohol, pepper put it in a jar let it sit over night and put it in your hair. Whatever you decide to do put a shower cap on because you dont want lice all over the house, and wash all the bedding. WASH EVERYTHING!!!!

I can tell you how to get rid of them and it is very cheap to do it, it just takes time. You go ahead and try the other answers you get here but please try mine, it works, I promise you!!!

My daughter was always coming home from her dads after visitation with head lice, I fought them all the time and it was so expensive. I ended up talking to a man that was a friend of mine that was a hair dresser about it. He told me what to do and how to do it and it worked. Fair warning, this does take time to do it but at least it does work, here is what he said to do:

You don't have to cut any hair off, even the longest is ok.

You will need Vaseline, Goop Hand cleaner, and your favorite shampoo and conditioner.

1st Work in the Vaseline, do not go sparingly with this, work it into the scalp and hair really good. Leave in hair for at least 10-15 min. This process is killing the lice and breaking down the "glue" that is holding the nits on the hair shaft.

2nd Put a lot of Goop Hand cleaner in the hair and work it good. This process is breaking up the Vaseline that was applied first. You may have to keeping adding the goop until you feeling the vaseline breaking up.

3rd Shampoo the hair and rinse, you may have to repeat this process several times until you don't feel any more vaseline in the hair.

4th Once you have washed and rinse the hair to the point that you no longer feel the vaseline in the hair, put the conditioner in the hair and work it in good and rinse hair.

5th Now you should be able to comb the hair and the nits should come right out as there is no "glue" holding them to the hair. You might even have to put the blow drier to the hair to help blow them out. But they will come out.

Like I said go ahead and try the other answers that you got, but if they fail, this one will not fail, just got to remember that it does take awhile to do this. But the Vaseline is what kills them and it has to stay in for at least 10-15 min ( it can stay longer if you want) to kill them. I know the vaseline is going to be messy but hey it works!!! Good luck!! PS Sorry this is so long, but wanted to give you all the details of what to do.

Go to your Dr they have this stuff you put in before they go to bed then in the morning you wash out it works very well also to keep head lice away for a while after words you can dilute vinigar and use it after you wash your hair rinse it good and the lice will stay away for some reason they do not like vinigar.

I've talked to a nurse on the phone about it, and if the nix doesn't work she told me that you should get a jar of mayonaise cover the hair with it through and through and leave it in for 24 hours, you don't even have to comb through the hair after. My mother did this to me when I was younger and it worked perfectly. just put a cap on it when she or he sleeps. if your child is a boy you could also shave his head, easy too.

Did you do the NIX treatment correctly? That should have worked. Does she have really long, or thick hair? You may want to seek the advice of a hairstylist who can definitely get rid of them.
