His great punching power was just one of the things that made him so great. Other things that made him the best boxer is his agility, speed, reflexes, attitude and style. Other boxers cant dodge punches like Mike Tyson can, and no one can hold his punch, its a fact.

Mike Tyson pre-rape conviction was a great heavyweight because of his punch, but even more so, the way he finished an opponent was unmatched, killer instinct. In his early years with Kevin Rooney he was also very humble and would actually show concern for some guy he just beat the snot out of, a quality I think he picked up from his year with Cus Damato. After he hooked up with King and dumped Rooney the cocky, brash side came to the forefront and with it down went his career. I'm from BedStuy in Brooklyn and actually ran into Tyson a few times at a PAL gym in Flatbush and he just kept to himself for the most part (this is in the late 70s). King took a great heavyweight and turned him into a carnival freak and a tabloid seller.

Discipline, natural talent ,and, God given power made Tyson a great boxer and he needed all three, as soon as the discipline left, so did the greatness.

He's not a great boxer. He's so overrated. He's fought so many bum in his career and lost to great fighters like Lewis and Holyfield. He's powerful and he's really fast when he's young. But could have done much better if his mentor Cus D'amato lived longer.

The pure strength of his punch because you can't name one resputiable fighter who fought him and that wasn't past his prime. And the greats he stepped into the ring with like Lewis beat him to a pulp.

he was never a great fighter. his managers were very good at matching him up against bums and short powerless guys.his best wins?a frightened blown up light heavyweight and an elderly former champion.every time he fought someone who didn't fear him he got destroyed.
