A homeless person would stand across from mcdonalds with a "will work for food sign" but won't bother grabbing an application while there's a help wanted sign on the window? If they smell and are dirty, the nearest homeless shelter will help clean them up right?

That's a good point, the 'will work for food' thing is as about as big a cliche as the checked-shirt field laborer thing. People need to work to support themselves and dump the sympathy ploys.

Work takes effort, though, and I'll bet if you got right down to it, the biggest healthcare crisis we have in america today is untreated mental illness, because some of these people are NUTS.

This is a complicated question. Some of the "will work for food" sign bearers dont really want food, they want money. They know most people arent going to bring them home and possibly risk their safety, but might give them a buck or two.

Also, homeless shelters are not in big supply. Many of them are filled up, some full of crime, too many rules that street people dont feel they can live with. Because most homeless shelters arent really just there as shelters, they also want to rehabilitate the homeless person. And some homeless people dont want or arent ready to be rehabilitated.

I am not sure how this relates to immigration, however I felt compelled to help you answer this for yourself. I think you know answer to this question, which is where I hope Beth (the first answer) is coming from. The answer to this question is quite simply, they don't want a job, if they did...they would have one, even if it is minimum wage at a fast food restaurant (hey, we all have to start somewhere). It is easier for them to ask for money than it is to earn it, because there are plenty of suckers out there willing to give it to them. A study was done in my area on this particular group of people (the ones posing as homeless holding signs cut from boxes, stating some sort of hardship, or asking for work for money or food). The study concluded that not a single one of these people had such hardships, and worse yet, many were qualified for better jobs than the one described here. A strong percentage of them actually had homes, cars, and families, being supported by their pandering, and some of them lived better than most who live at or even above the poverty level. This is a large scam, and one I refuse to support, even on the off chance the next person pandering with a sign, actually did have a problem.

I think you've gotten some really good answers here to your question. While I'm not real certain I understand exactly why you would post this particular question in Immigration as opposed to maybe Society and Culture or something like that, but I am thinking you are trying to make the comparison of American citizens who are bums and the "hardworking" illegal immigrants who you think are not bums. However, you are comparing apples to oranges.

Bums who are Americans ARE our problem, but Illegal immigrants should NOT be our problem. Illegal immigrants, regardless of how "hardworking" they are, are also "bums" in their own way. The fact that they are working either under the table or are using fraudulent SSNs and often receiving social assistance, as well, because of their "low income" means that they are also leeches and economic drains on the US economy. Every country has their "bums" and social drop-outs and that has been true forever. However, there are many different reasons why these people are social drop-outs and we cannot judge them because we have not walked in their shoes. Many, and in fact most of them, have mental illnesses and/or alcohol/drug addictions. There is always going to be a certain segment of society that are like this. However, I don't have as much of a problem with these people as I have with illegal immigrants because we should NOT even have to deal with their being here! The bums who are our legal citizens, we can deal with them because they are ours. The bums who are illegal immigrants - we should NOT have to deal with.

The fact that illegal immigrants will work for less pay than Americans will is NOT a bonus for US! It is only a bonus for the businesses and corporations who are taking advantage of these people by paying them slave wages that are then supplemented by the tax-paying citizens in the form of the social services they use (schools, hospitals, welfare, crime, etc.) and the income taxes these illegal immigrants do NOT pay! If you think of it, the illegal immigrant who works for, say, $5.00 an hour is really working for maybe $12 to $15 per hour because the additional $7 to $10/hour cost is picked up by the taxpaying citizens. This is NOT cheap labour - it is only more money in the pockets of the businesses and corporations who are taking dreadful advantage of these people! Basically, it is legal slave labour! Why would you condone slavery??

Most places will not hire a homeless person if they feel the homeless person can not be presentable daily. Some people like to live on the streets, it is an easy out for them to have society pay their way through life.

A Homeless person lacks one thing they ask for on an application a MAILING Address. Yes there are homeless people who are there by Choice but, there are also ones there who are simply victoms of hard times ect. And believe it or not some may simply be to proud to accept a hand up.

In my society there would be no grades, just learn what we must learn, and what we want to learn.
One day i think one teacher can teach over the internet with a web cam 600 to 700 kids at a time. Less teachers but more education.
Why go through all those classes in high school when you dont even use them.
Go to a job, that job should tell you what you have to learn, and since it is your dream job you should learn how to do it.

This may shock you, but the truth is that the people holding those signs don't really want to work. Many of them are alcoholics or drug addicts who just want to get enough for another bottle/fix and a burger. Then they'll go back and start all over again.

Some of those people are also mentally ill and this is truly sad.

Most of the people who really need and want help, go to shelters, food banks, or agencies that can provide more than just a few bucks for wine or crack.

One thing about the "homeless" that aggravates me...why are they out on nice days mooching, but you don't see them when it's snowing or extremely hot? If they are so put out, why do you see most of them in clean clothes, new backpacks, with their pets and...most of them seem well nourished? Most of these beggars are scam artists. They are too lazy to get off their butts to actually work and they expect you, the public, to give them tax free dollars. Bet they have a larger bank account than we all do.

Of course. But these people never actually intend to work for food. Have you ever tried offering them a day's worth of work in exchange for a day's worth of meals and $20 to boot? I have, and they will cuss you out every time. They never intend to work. That's why they aren't working. In this blessed country, if someone wants to work, they can find work. It may not be what they were looking for, but a job of some kind for minimum wage can be found. These bums know this, but they are hoping you don't. In simple terms, they are a result of our social programs. They have been taught to depend on the government and people's charity. We have trained them to be professional moochers. and in responce to all the bogus answerers on here who gave excuses such as IDs, personal appearance, etc., I give one question back to them: What about illegal aliens?
