Are we using the scientific method?

The earth is a closed system. This means nothing new externally is added.

Living organisms (anything that is alive) have one criteria: reproduction. A rock is not a living organisms, because a rock does not reproduce.

But in this closed system we can find many processes. For example, water has three states: frozen, liquid, and gas which we call ice, water, and stream. Chemistry and physics.

We have different process regarding birth, after birth before death, and death.

Now to your question: The earth is not a living organism because the earth does not reproduce. The earth which is a closed system has lots of processes. Even as much as we know about these processes, there are more waiting to be explored.
