Why does a person on unemployment and welfare who is able to work go to mcdonalds and buy food but will not grab an application while there's a help wanted sight on the window?

Because fast food places usually hire kids (and here in Texas it's mostly hispanic kids) because they can be paid a minimum wage. Many homeless people appear to be middle aged.

Also, I think you have to have an address, a phone number or some way to be reached, you have to appear reliable and look clean and neat.

Maybe a homeless person doesn't want a job.

Some may think McDonalds is Beneath them. I happen to work for McDonalds and No the Pay isn't great. I don't see me and Bill Gates competeing for worlds richest person anytime soon but, it is a job. I believe if a person is able to work they should. Even if it means taking a job at lower pay. Make them work and then take part of there unemployment to make up the difference in pay. When that runs out they either need to get another job or do something else.

French Sweetie, you need to find the correct board for your questions. This is not about immigration, this is about society and culture or something like that. As I said in my answer to your other inappropriate question in this forum about bums, you are comparing apples to oranges here.

Our American citizen bums and welfare recipients are legitimate social problems of the USA - illegal immigrants should NOT be problems of the USA! If illegal immigrants were not here accepting jobs for less than at least the minimum wage that an American citizen would need to be paid, then there just might be fewer Americans on welfare and EI (However, I don't consider EI recipients to be social problems. They legitimately pay into the EI system when working and when they lose their jobs for various reasons, EI is just insurance until they locate another job, usually very temporary.) As well, I am also all for welfare reform as I do not agree with able-bodied people sitting on their butts and collecting welfare for any extended period of time. I can understand that sometimes people go through a period of emotional difficulty that makes it hard to be employed, but this should only be a short-term thing and everything should be done to spur them to get out and on with it to further employment. There will always be those who will abuse a system and take advantage as long as they can get away with it. We need to change the rules for eligibility for welfare and motivate people to get to work. I can understand that there are some situations where a single parent with a few kids cannot be expected to take a job at McDonald's while also having to pay daycare. In these instances, there should be subsidies for their daycare and perhaps help with transportation costs, as well as ongoing counseling to help them get better education and training so they can get off the system completely and to help them prevent further pregnancies.

Your analogy is not helpful or even appropriate in this forum.

Probably because they want to earn more than the minimum wage. How can they look for a job that pays enough to support a family if they are busy flipping burgers for a pittance?

You probably don't know enough about the background of someone you see eating in MacDonald's to have such a strong biased opinion.

Unemployment is a benefit that a person has earned by working. If they had not been steadily employed for a long while, they would not qualify for unemployment.

I made a point about this in my research paper I did on illegal immigration last semester. In order to alleviate the jobs americans supposedly wont do when the illegals are gone,(hypothetically), why don't we make the able bodied people on welfare do these jobs. Make them earn that welfare check they use to buy expensive cell phones and cheap baby formula. They need to work for that money.

That was just one of my suggestions. But I think it is a good one.

How does a person get unemployment and welfare. I have never heard of this scheme before, I always thought it was one or the other. And how does a welfare case afford McDonalds, that crap is not cheap.

I asked a panhandler in Richmond, Va that question once. He asked me for money and gave me a sob story about just getting out of jail and how he couldn't find work. Two blocks away was a McDonald's that was hiring, and starting people at $8 an hour (it is located in a pretty bad part of town, four blocks from the city jail). He said he wouldn't flip burgers. He started getting mad when I tried to persuade him to only hold the job while he looked for another, but he didn't want to hear it. He never got any money from me, but he sure was pissed off about someone telling him to get a job.

Because the pay at Mc Donalds will total much less than the amount recieved from the government. And once you re employed you don't get the money from the government. Then you can't feed your family or buy gas for your car or anything. Better to skip the McDonalds App.

i am currently unemployed, but not recieving unemployment. I decided to take a job a burger place in a nearby town (The town I live in is about 200 ppl and 15 miles away from the nearest town.) After 3 days I quit because after putting $60 in gas in the car, and paying for my sitter, I was in the hole $40. If the govt would do something about our crappy economy like gas prices etc, people wouldnt have to rely on govt assistance to make it from day to day.
