Consult your owner's manual's operation and troubleshooting sections.

Do you have your receiver placed in a well ventilated location?

If your receiver is too hot to touch, then I would be concerned. Otherwise, it should be okay. You can go down to where you purchased it (or a local store that carries that model) and see if the demo model gets as warm when powered up.

Happy listening!

This seems to be very normal for Onkyo receivers no matter what source that you are using or how you are listening to it. I was surprised that yours has a fan. My Onkyo TX-SR503 A/V receiver doesn't have one. Mine gets substantially warm also regardless of whether I am using the headphones or the speakers. When I was trying out several other Onkyos at Circuit City, I noticed the exact same heat behavior. As long as it is properly ventilated, I wouldn't worry about it. Just enjoy that Onkyo, they are great receivers.

The fan should kick in when HOT. Onkyo runs warm because of the high current, class A power. Email Onkyo if it really concerns you.

Seems like it is running normal to me. All receivers get warm, some get down right hot. depends on their power supply in the amp section. That's why some amps have cooling fans and some do not. The fan does not have to run constantly, there is probably some sort of sensor to tell it to run the fan and when to turn off. You might check your owner's manual also, to make sure that you have proper ventilation, this will cause an amp to run hot.
