Decide what you would like the pet to do during the days, where he will sleep. Can you tolerate shedding, barking, digging, chewing? Maybe adopting an older dog might be better, since much of that wild destructiveness will be gone.

Are other family members okay with having the dog? Will they share responsibilities? Where do they draw the line? How much grooming do you want to do? How much time do you have to spend training and socializing your dog. Do you want to compete in obedience and agility? Do you want a dog that can be trained to be a therapy dog (and visit cancer patients and old folks homes).

Do you have a secure fenced yard? A dog friendly neighborhood? Do avoid needing to chain your dog up. How will the garden be protected? Will you be able to reshelve and move special things you don't want the dog chewing?

Can you afford vet visits, good chow for the dog, and other necessities?

Make a list of things your dog MUST conform to, and then decide the things you can give leeway on. Keep those parameters in mind while you consider the different breeds, or mixtures of breeds. Mixed and badly bred purebreeds will tend to have genetic components which means you may need to be especially flexible in your expectations with such dogs.

If you get a dog or puppy from a shelter, you may save its life, but this is a double edge sword. Thousands of people with puppies to 'get rid of' just tell people to take it to the shelter if it doesn't work out, and they continue to breed and give the same advice. People continue to dump pets because it is 'politically correct' to promote and support the perpetual revolving door of irresponsibly bred, incorrectly homed, badly trained animals dumped at shelters.

Breeders that really care about their breed will want their dogs back if for some reason you cannot keep the dog. If you want a dog with a predictable temperament that has been carefully bred and from a good bloodline maintained by a caring breeder, sometimes you can get an older retired show dog that is a champion and has been trained and neutered. You will usually have to prove how good a home you can be.

Go to some dog shows, watch some local dog training classes with mixed and purebred dogs before you get a dog. Talk to people there about what you want in a dog, and some may be happy to advise you and will share funny stories with you.

Well where do you live, ddo you have kidds what do you want the dog for and so on, I have raised a Boston Terrier who is now about 4 years old and he is very smart, loving, and yet protective and is great with other animals and kids, he was very easy to train and is a lot of fun and knows a lot of neat tricks. The Boston Terrier is about 10-25 pounds average occassionally bigger, they can be used for hunting or as a companion but also can be used in dog shows, the boston is also a hard dog to breed and about 90 percent have to be born c- section because of size of head, they are a hyper dog but is very adaptable to farm life or apartment life and they are a breed of their own.

I also raised springer spaniels and these dogs also are great small to medium ddogs and very family oriented yet protective. They love to play and work. they are great for hunting, for kids to be around, and get along with most other animals also,

A cocker spaniel is medium sized and a pretty good dog. For smaller, I like lhasa apso. Both breeds have a nice temperament.

Maltese, but it depends on what you are looking for. Maltese dogs do not shed, and are good for people with animal allergies.... but you must up keep their coat. Their hair get long and tangles. They are smart........ close is good but closer is better..... More then a lap dog. Maltese will literally try to sit on your chest.... Very good companions. Not too good with other animals....Very jealous and not too fond of children...... Great for elderly people and couples with no children..... they require alot of attention.... good for people who aren't able to get out and play with their dogs much. maltese get plenty of exercise in the home.... Beautiful Dog, Loyal and loves everyone........

Boston Terriers are a small and extremely affectionate dog that love to snuggle up with their humans when they're not playing. Mine is awesome and I love him.

there is a test at tickle.com to see what kind of dog breed you are....you might take it just for fun then look up that breed and see if it would match your lifestyle.
.....there is nothing wrong with a mixed breed though.

Get a west highland terrier. They are kinda hyper so make sure you'll be able to play with him/her and give it alot of attention and love before you consider getting one.
