Well, that would be rude. And if the dogs LIKES water, such as running through the sprinklers or swimming, he'd probably learn quickly to bark when he wants to get wet.

It matters when and why your dog is barking. Does he live in the house and bark when he feels his territory is being breached (ex.: the mailman, kids riding past on bikes) and then stop when they are gone? What he's learned is when he barks at these things, they go away. To him it's a job well-done and he's once again protected his house.

If he's an outside dog, he's lonely and needs attention. To punish him would be cruel. He needs to be attended to and made a part of the family. Teaching him how to get attention and praise with appropriate behavior not only makes him a good companion, but gives him confidence and lessens his barking for attention, since he'd know better ways of getting it.

Try to work with your dog, not against him. If you give more detailed information and tell me what kind of dog he is, we can see what might help.

You can also wait for the moment during his barking when he pauses and immediately praise him in a high happy voice. what you need to do is ignore the barking and praise the NOT barking. Be careful not to be praising him if/when he starts barking again, or he'll think the praise is for his melodious voice!

We have a neighbor dog that barks all the time. It's really annoying. What stops him immediately, and keeps him quiet for hours, is we set a firecracker off. The noise is very scarey for dogs, and extremely loud. It's humane, because it doesn't hurt him, and we're able to go back to sleep at night! If you can't do firecrackers, get a CO2 pistol, which shoots nothing but air, but creates a very loud sound, just like a gun.

get a cat instead. dogs bark. humans talk. seriously, the best and safest product to buy is the citronella collar. it sprays just a small amount of the cirtonella scent each time the dog barks and generally dogs don't like the smell. it is safe and non-toxic. also, citronella is what is used in many insect repellant candles, as they don't like it either so mosquitos that transmit heartworms will at least steer clear everytime he barks..
