Perhaps your sleeping position is affecting the circulation in your feet , try sleeping with a pillow between your knees and see if that helps . Because you say it goes away after you are up for a bit , that led me to believe this may have something to do with it. The walking around would get the blood flowing properly again. The pillow may prevent it from being hindered in the first place.

This is a sign of plantar fascitis.
The cardinal sign is stabbing pain when you first wake up in the morning and step down.
The treatment = night splints
and stretching exercises
The reason = you lock your feet in a down position when you sleep... sometimes causing inflammation at the base of your feet specifically at the tip of your heel on the middle of your foot.
Night splints and streching are great for this ailment if you catch it early which you have
Make an appt with an ortho to get the script for the splints.... and after a few weeks with them and some stretches you should be good.

Hi, I suffered from the same problem. My doctor said it was the result of blood vessels in the feet getting ever so slightly swollen during sleep. Once you walk a little bit it gets the muscles to warm up and the blood flow to get back to normal. I was told that putting your feet up or cooling them well before sleeping would alleviate it. Im not saying this always fixes the problem but its an idea that may help you a little or give you some idead on asking your Dr. about it.

It could be athlet's foot. I managed to do the same thing a couple months ago. I wasn't taking care of my feet while moving my household goods. By the time we finished packing, I could barely walk!
It was really strange, because my feet didn't really change in condition for a while, and then they started to peel. I used a spray-on treatment and it worked well.
You might also want to try Miracle Foot Repair, and for added comfort, anything that has emu oil in it. I have friends who swear by emu oil for anything that ails you.

I am old, my dad is older and my son in mid 20's.
It is ligament damage and the change in circulation when yu get up. I just talked to Dad's podiatrist and he said that you have to cure the inflammation first by taking anti-inflamatory's like ibprofen, 3 times a day. Then you have to rest them not abuse them all day every day, and take chondroitin glucosomine supplements to help your ligament health along. It just runs in some families. My son has always been the Hulk. Since he was born, pushed up in the incubator..his feet are like that and so are mine and dads'. His rib busted just water skiing. Good luck.

If after you walk a bit and the pain subsides it's probably heel spurs (Ihave them, too)......Doctor saw them in xrays and told me to do this exercise- go up on tiptoe then back down, then do a runners stretch with one foot forward and the other back.....They really work.......Take care........

My mom just got plantar fasciitis...take your foot and stretch your toes back, check for any hard veins popping out of the sole of your foot. My best advice is see your doc and he might be able to send you to a specialist.

Do you use them to walk on? That could put a strain on them. Try not using them for a week or ten days and see if they stop hurting.

Do your feet smell?
Does your nose run?
If you answer 'yes' to both of these questions, you are built up-side-down.
