Hi Chris, you have an interest in Revelation and that is good to see, when I was college age I memorized 18 chapters of Revelation and Jack Van Impe which I met in Chicago has it all memorized but to the question. The black horse is a result of the red horse and the red horse follows the false peace of the white horse. No the black horse has not taken place yet because the Antichrst riding on the white horse has not presented himself yet but as you can see in the news today, his appearance will not be far off. billy

Not in my opinion. Matthew 25:13 says "Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh."
From Wikipedia
"Black Horse
The third horseman, riding the black horse, is popularly called Famine. The black color of the third horse could be a symbol of death and famine. Its rider was holding a scale, which means scarcity of food, higher prices, and famine, likely as a result of the wars from the second horseman. Food will be scarce, but luxuries such as wine and oil will still be readily available.
The "a measure of wheat for a penny" from the King James Version might not sound like a famine to modern ears, but in the NIV we read "a quart of wheat for a day's wages", which is a little clearer."
Of course there are many interpretations of what the horsemen represent.
However, there have been worse times in human history than now (black death, great depression, World Wars I&II, etc.), so I don't think we're at the end days yet.

The black horse symbolizes famine. But I can certainly see why you might think it symbolized greed. Revelation was a vision of things that were happening in the Lord's Day (some call it the end-times). It all began to take place in 1914 when the times of the nations ended as Jesus sat down at God's right hand and began ruling. We know this because of Bible chronology and also because Jesus' first act as reigning king was to throw Satan and his demons down to the earth and out of Heaven. Satan and the demons were then confined here and became angry, so the Bible says "Woe to the earth" as a result of this cage they are stuck in. We see that the results really are woeful and unpleasant for those of us humans who are in the cage with them at this time.

The scales indicate rising costs? My understanding was the scale always represented the balance of justice and injustice.
I don't think the black horse has arrived but you have just proved how people misconstrue the bible to represent and prove their own beliefs.

The Book of Revelation started in John's(writer of Revelation) time. The book is a historical account of the Christian church.
I would like to recommend a website that may answer this and perhaps other questions related to the Book of Revelation.

How do all of us understand that the "end cases" has been fulfilled? Zachariah says that Jesus shall stand on the Mount of Olive sin THAT DAY and that an earthquake will chop up the Mount of Olives in 2. So, while anybody or any tabloid claims that Messiah has already returned, don't think it. in basic terms look on the Mount of Olives!!

Coal is also black, and had it's price rising for 100 years
African people are black, and had been entering Christian world for centuries.

Perhaps that's overly analytical.
Scales represent justice, not merchandise. Although there is dialog shortly afterwards that mentions oil, black represents death.
"Do not touch the oil and the wine."
The mention of the expense of food (roughly translated, "a quart of wheat for a day's wages") suggests famine.
