I would recommend a backpack. Messenger bags are cute, but they usually don't have as much space as a backpack. Plus, with a messenger bag, you get weight only on one shoulder, and this pulls your spine to the side and can cause back problems over time. With a backpack, you still have to be a little careful of weight, but the weight distribution is equal on both sides of your spine, so you are less likely to develop back problems from it. I know this from experience...I carried a messenger bag with a laptop computer in it for my first year of college. It's been 2 years and my back still hasn't recovered from it.

From what I can tell, while messenger bags are far prettier, they don't hold as much stuff. If you want to look cute, AND hold a pile of books ,go for the messenger. If you want something functional, use a backpack.
