My spayed cat has decided she will no longer use the litter box. She does her business near the box, but not in it. She also likes the bathtub. She is not old, or sick. She is eating normally. She does not appear to have worms. The litter boxes are all cleaned regularly. I have not changed the brand of litter, or added new pets to the family. Any ideas what she might be trying to tell me?

Let me add, that I have three litter boxes throughout the house, and I also have a neutered male, that goes where he should.

The three litter boxes have been in the same three spots for years. And I have washed the boxes, and put new litter in them.

And all three are covered boxes. This question is getting longer and longer!

Depending on her age, she might have dental problems. My 5 year old was acting up like that and sure enough he needed his teeth cleaned cause his gums were hurting. I never could tell cause he never lost a pound. Good luck!

I had the same problem. My cat would not use his litter box, if it was dirty. I cleaned it regularly, but that wasn't enough. If he used the box more than once or twice, the next time he did his business on the floor next to the box. He also on occasion used the sink in the middle bathroom. Hey, I wish I could train him to always use the sink, then I could just wash it down! One thing you might consider is how old is the litter in the box. Even if you scoop it out several times a day, they can still smell it if the litter is old. Sometimes we clean out the box and just add new littler. However cats can smell the old littler. I got a very large container that holds a lot of litter. I think it was a plastic box people use to change the oil in their cars. I filled it with new litter and it is about 5 inches thick. The pee forms a hard clump before it gets to the bottom, so it scoops out all of it, leaving nothing on the bottom. Sometimes if your litter is not deep enough it sinks to the bottom, and when you scoop it out, they can still smell the stuff on the bottom. I know that litter can be expensive, but not as expensive as new carpet or tile. I empty the litter box once a month, even if I can't smell it and put fresh littler in it. It might cost me 15 dollars a month for litter, but I think it is worth it. He never makes a mistake if his litter is clean! Good luck

I would give my neighbors first born if my cats would use the bathtub. Easy to clean, easy to disinfect, poo in the toilet, pee down the drain. I would be in heaven.

She just may be trying to tell you that it IS the cleanest box in the house, and it always smells of your nice shower stuff.

Other than that I am at a loss here.

Well its not marking...i have no idea. My cats litterbox is in the laundry room and sometimes if i leave some clothes or towels on the floor to wash, he goes right on them. But thats because hes just marking. Im not sure if females mark though...

try spraying those areas with feliway or citrus spray. if that doesn't work, go to the vet to see if maybe she has a uti.

i think you clean it too much. most animals like SOME smell so they can know that it's their teritory.
