I smoked for 25 years and was up to two packs a day and had the first signs of emphysema when I finally quit. I looked for every tip I could find and here are some of them.

1. The nicotine fits at first feel like they're going to last forever, but they really only last a few minutes,,, so to remember 'this too shall pass' and get busy to make the few minutes go by faster.

2. The habit is partly something to do with our hands and mouth, so finding substitutes helps. I had a frustration pencil that I would roll vigorously in my hands. I nibbled on pretzels. Some people start nibbling on fattening stuff,, but nibbling on pretzels is not fattening.

3. Watch out for the events that trigger the smoking habit... for me it was being on the phone, and break times from work. Find something else to do at these times.

4. If we delay the first cigarette of the day as long as possible, the total at the end of the day will be less.

5. Only smoke part of each cigarette.. don't worry about 'wasting it'.

6. Put the money that would have been spent in a jar and at the end of the week do spend it on some kind of treat.

7. Cutting down, or weaning off of them, is helpful to a point,, but can drag the quitting process on forever,,, so once the number of cigs goes down to half a pack a day.... just go cold turkey from there, so we can't rationalize why we can have just one... it is none.

8. Remember that after a week of not smoking your body is going to feel the difference already of being able to breathe better, smell things, and your breath will be nicer. The 3rd week will find you having more bounce in your step and more stamina in your activities. Enjoy that and look forward to even better! a sweeter, healthier you for years to come instead of being all blue and struggling for breath and turning off the oxygen for one more cig.

IF you don't have an addictive personality type you probably can just quit, alot of people can and do BUT if you can't and the patches and or gum with nicotine doesn't work a doctor can write you a prescription for a brand new drug put that has alot of success. FYI for you girls and guys who smoke to keep the weight off you don't have to smoke it nicotine gum will do as well and won't lead to lung cancer!

My husband was a 3-pack-a-day man. One day he said he had a bad dream. Didn't remember the dream, but quit cold turkey. Now he is such a convert. He absolutely cannot abide smoking and thinks that "cold turkey" is the only way to go.

I only smoked a few cigarettes a day. Developed a bad post-nasal drip problem and my doctor very emphatically said "no smoking." It was quit, or get a new doctor. I quit.

Good luck.

Go cold turkey
Put a jar in front of you
deposit all the money you would have smoked down in to said jar each day
work on planning a vacation exactly one year after you quit using that money to celebrate
it will be great motivation
