How can I get into the singing career (by myself) with out spending big bucks?

All my friends tell me I am a great singer, I love it, and would love to make it a career. But all the things I've looked into or heard about are REALLY expensive! I don't have money!!! I even tryed out for Womens Choir in school. I made it! And it's hard to make it into that!! 50 ppl auditioned and only 15 made it!!
