It was his "secret hiding place". He doesn't go there at present because its not really secret anymore. His latest place is in the hall closet. But since I discovered his newest hiding place, he may rotate back to under the bed, or his other (all previously discovered) hiding places. Actually, he must have got a good laugh when I couldn't find him one day. I searched everywhere, calling him, etc. I finally found him right smack in the middle of the living room. He gave me a look that said "So , were you looking for me?"

I think Mandy does it to drive me crazy. We go to bed and then the dog won't stop barking at her under the bed. I get up and spend a long time trying to get her out. She hides behind the under-bed storage boxes. Finally I get her out and she goes to sleep with my daughter where she is supposed to be. I think my other cat, Star is too fat to hide under the bed though. She never does it.
