PSTD can occur if a person experiences, witnesses, or is confronted with an event that involves actual or threatened death or serious injury to oneself or others. The nature of the event is not as important as one's perception that one's life or the life of someone else is threatened. People experience PTSD through many different types of experiences from going through war to witnessing a motor vehicle accident.

Some people can go through traumatic experiences, but not develop PTSD. People with PTSD will respond to a traumatic situation with a sense of intense fear, helplessness, and horror.

If you went through Hurricane Katrina, it is very plausible that you were in a situation where you percieved a threat to your life and/or the lives of other people. This is may have been very frightening to you and you may have responded with intense fear.

In order to be diagnosed with PTSD though, you must be diagnosed by a qualified professional, a doctor, psychiatrist, or a psychologist. They will want to know whether you have been having flashbacks of the hurricane, nightmares, avoiding things which remind you of the trauma, feeling irritable, feeling depressed, having problems with concentration, and other symptoms related to PTSD.

The short answer is YES, you can develop PTSD from going through a hurricane. The bigger question involves talking to a professional and figuring out whether this diagnosis fits your experience and what can be done to help you deal with the symptoms you experience.

Hope this helps

If you don't talk to someone about it. Then yes the bad memory of that day will allways haunt you, talking will make it easier (not make it go away)
I may be wrong but PTSD has to to with dealing with the same situations day to day.
