If Julie does NOT want to fly, why are you trying to talk her into it? She is apprehensive, don't force her. It will make matters worse. She will be more apprehensive if you push her to do something with which she is not comfortable. If she wants to take the train, and it gives her a better comfort level, let her do it. Maybe she can travel a day earlier on the bus. You can meet her at the hotel when she arrives in New York. There are no ideas to make her fly. It's mean-spirited of you to try to force your friend into something that does not make her feel good. DROP IT! No one likes to be coerced into something.
Don't speak about it. Let her do it her way. Try to be more accommodating of her. She's the one with the phobia. Maybe she feels uncomfortable for a reason.

well I'm afraid of flying as well, but I'm afraid of the pain that I suffer from while flying (I've had numerous ear problems and because I have such thin eardrums I cannot deal with the pressure in the cabin) so I load up on painkillers and motion sickness pills. They usually knock me out so I can't tell the difference. Since I'm sure she's not in the same boat I am I would try a sleeping pill, something that will knock her out right when she gets on the plane (unless she's flying alone). Either way someone that is so afraid of something that it changes something so drastic (like taking a train for 3 days vs. a 3 hour plane ride) has a problem and should seek real medical attention. She may have a phobia.
Also, you're much more likely to die in a car accident then you are to die in a plane crash.

Sorry honey, but people who have phobias can't just "get over it" in a minute. Fear of flying is a big problem. Just imagine how many people have quit flying since 9/11. The sky is just not as safe as it used to be, especially with the lowered standards airlines have these days to boot! Plane crashes due to faulty equipment; delays; ice on the wings; crashing in the ocean; it's all very scary. Unless she goes into a coma, I don't see the lassie flying. The train is so much more comforting, with the de-railing, and Indian ambushes. The rumble of the rail is very romantic as well. Joking aside, it is not easy to over come phobia's and it is best left to the professionals. Good luck and I hope you come to a happy compromise.

It's funny cuz I always wished I had bigger balls to do just that. I fly back and forth more than most and I have always dreamed of either taking a train or better yet driving cross country. But too many days wasted on my limited vacation. I have a couple of friends the same way.... so tell me if you figure it out.

tell her this. from the time the first airplane was flown to now, only one plane has crashed due to turbulence, and that was 11 years ago. there is a better chance of having an accident in a car or a train than a plane crashing. by going on a train, she has a higher chance of an accident than a plane. yeah, i'm sure this is gonna scare her either way but just tell her the safest way to travel is by flight. good luck!

if the idea of taking three or four days to get there isn't enough, it's probably a lost cause. however, i have gone cross-country (US) by train twice. the other problems with it, which you could try on her, are: 1. it's a bit more claustrophobic, even worse than planes, 2. the restrooms are usually extra-disgusting (refined people usually don't take the train nowadays), and 3. the service is also even worse than with the airlines.

Have her jump off of a 2 story building. Trust me once she lands she'll wish she was flying.
You can also tell her to wear a costume just for fun while she's flying. I recommend that she wear one of those muslim headscarves and carry a box of boxcutters with her. If asked, have her explain that she is an islamic jihadist who is also a traveling boxcutter salesman on the weekend.
=)

Remind her that air travel is the SAFEST way of travel and the chances of an airplane crashing are 1 in 11 million
