We stayed on the Canadian Side and loved it.
I strongly recommend that no matter how much it might terrify you that you take the Maid of the Mist ride to the edge of the falls. I was petrified with fear, but it was such an awesome experience that I'm so happy that I didn't let my fears stop me from doing it.

On the Canadian side, you can see the entire falls, American, Bridal Veil and Horseshoe in a single glance. Plus they have light shows on the American Falls at night, makes it look real mystical and somewhat romantic.
On the US side, you can't really see the falls in their entirety cos you'll be looking at them from the sides. But you can actually walk right by the river and touch the water before it actually falls over the edge. And you can hear the roar and feel the spray on your face. Plus there are great photo-ops here too.
Honestly, if you have a full day and access to a car and good directions, you could probably cover both sides cos there're bridges linking them. And if you have more than 1 day then you could probably fit in a Maid of the MIst boat ride or some of the other tours they have on either side.

The new york side is designated as a State or National Park (I forget which) so it is scenic, attractive, and all in all plesant. The Canadian side is much more like the Wisconscin Dells: touristy, filled with cacinos, and in generall more like a tourist trap/carnival town. So really, even though the view isn't as good, you're much better off on the NY side. (and the maid of the mist boad is worth the money.)

You can actually go to both sides you know.. If you are on the Canada side, you can go beneath the falls.. visit the sale shops.. and I think take a ride on the water..
American side, you can see the falls, though not up close.. see the buildings on the Canadian side.. and wonder if you should not go and visit the shops, or take the ride on the water..
Go take a look from both vantages.. YOU decide which is best..

Well what you can do is drive down to NYC, shop, eat, walk around and do whatever tourist people do in grand ol NYC.
Then take a drive thru Upstate and take the lovely scenic route (of course) and you won't be far into Canada.
Believe you me, it's worth it only because it was a tradition that my family and I would take a drive up to Canada during the Fourth of July weekend.

Canadian side is better because you can stand right next to the Horseshoe Falls and even go behind it. (I think you have to pay for that and they will provide the raincoats) Also you can see the American side. Been there, done that. Trust me. Enjoy. : )

Canadian side. Don't believe the reports that, like the Canadian dollar, it's only 70% as good.
