I've had my cat for almost 2 years which is how old he is. He's content with me and my brother, but everyone else in the family he's scared of. He's too much of a scaredy cat and gets jumpy all the time. like when he was eating, someone came next to him so he quickly stopped eating and ran outside. and then when ever someone gets next to him or he hears footsteps he runs away. Can anyone offer me any advice/techniques to socialize him and make him more comfortable around people. he's friendly with stray cats and other animals for some reason, but not people.

Good luck I have a 13 year old cat and she still glares at anyone but me. I think they have to be socialized when they are very little when they are still with Mom. You need to pick them up at least a few times a day and talk and pet them so they get used to being handled by humans. As nasty as my cat is she was so proud of her babies she didn't mind that I did that. When they were nursing I would just pet them and she would just purr.

One thing you could do would be to take the cat up to people while you are holding him. This exposes him to other people while feeling safe, because you are holding him. When you do this, advise the people to not make any sudden moves or loud noises.

Other than taking your cat to the vet and having him medicated for a social anxiety disorder (I am not kidding), you will just have to be patient with him. Some cats are just more social than others, and your cat just may not like bunches of people.

One other thing to think about. Has anyone been mean to the cat? I mean, scared him or stepped on him or something. It sounds like something has occurred to make your cat a fraidy cat.

I had a cat like that once. He was a Himalayan, what a beauty. They have a different way of viewing things.

Reminds me of a little saying, When you pet a dog, they love and lick you and lay there thinking wow, you are the king. When you pet a cat, they purr and look around the room boasting, "I AM the king."

Get a large cat cage, one big enough for a bed, food dish, water dish, and toilet. The cat must be able to see out of the cage. Just before someone is scheduled to visit, put him in the cage and have the cage near where your visitor will be. Tell the visitor to ignore the cat. This may get your cat used to situation of having a stranger around and show him he isn't going to be hurt.

When I feed my cats, I sit near by and say their names and maybe pet them while they eat. Also when they sit on my lab, I say their names before petting them. That way they feel good about me saying their names and will come when I call them. That makes it easy to put them in their cage for transport to the vet.
