The place where I work has a cafeteria. I often eat pasta or vegetables there, because I grew up eating those kinds of foods and I like them. My co-workers often look at my plate and ask if I am a vegetarian. I don't like it. It makes me feel bad. It seems like my co-workers are thinking, "She's weird. She should eat meat." But maybe I am mis-interpreting. Are my coworkers just asking because they're curious? Are they trying to make conversation? Are they actually trying to be friendly? What do you think?

They are just curious, I get asked that too because I eat a lot of pastas and spinach... don't worry too much about it, their friendly, just tell them that you really like pasta and vegetables, but you do eat meat.

You have to understand it from the perspective of someone carnivorous like myself. Hearing that someone doesn't eat meat is like hearing someone say "I hate chocolate!" -- Indeed, its a view that some harbor, but its nearly impossible to 'get' for the other guy. So, I suppose there's a certain mystery to it.

However, I have noticed that meat-eaters are often annoyed by vegetarians (and vegans moreso), however I feel this is simply masking the underlying political tension that both parties are aware of that prompt these different behaviors.

It doesn't matter what you eat, Ring Girl. People alllllllllways feel the need to comment on what another person's eating or reading. (Think I'll post a question on that book thing!) If you ate a hamburger everyday, they'd say "Dag! You sure do like beef, huh?" That's why I find a nice quiet spot farrrr away from everyone where I can eat and read in peace. Don't let it bother you. Those are people who have nothing else going on in their lives.

Just curious. If they never see you eat meat, it's not an unusual question for them to ask. I'm sure they don't think you're weird. Just eat what you want and don't worry about it.

well, vegetarians are kinda proud to be a vegetarian and they would like other people to be vegetarians with them. thats why they have those "dont eat our friens!!' bumperstickers on the back of their hybrids. and maybe they are just trying to start a conversation to get to know you better ;) and im sure they arent thinking your weird. have guts and try not to care so much about what other people think. who cares? its not like the rest of your life depends on what they think of you

i think they ask that just because maybe they are just curious or maybe because they eat a lot of meat and they think people are vegeterians if they see a person's plate without meat one time

Have some damn courage. Who cares what your co-workers think of you? It's even more ridiculous that you would "feel bad" about something like that. Get a grip.

I'm a vegan and I don't care if they think I'm weird and should eat meat or not. I really wouldn't care what they thought if I were you.
