Why would they need to?
And why do you need to know?

Yes, dogs can hold their breath, um they can probably hold it 4 30 seconds before their instinct tells them to get some air, but good question!

Yes my pit bull will swim under water and I know other dogs such as retrievers that hold their breath. If your dog will fetch try to sink its favorite toy until it figures out its under the water. Start with a full bath tub.

Yes, my dog went swimming with me every weekend and he is obsess with it, I had a tennis ball and played catch with him. I witness the skill of diving from a dog its incredible but my dog is a pro at it training for years 5-6. My dogs longest breath was 3.53min/sec. Best recommended don't try it only if you train with it to do.

Yes they can. A dog once attacked me for no apparent reason. I kicked it, but it kept on trying to bite me -- and finally got me on the leg. I put it in a head lock and smothered his face with my shirt for about 3 minutes.

When it finally went limp, I removed the shirt off its face and I heard him breathe in and out deeply.

Hold your dog underwater, and when it stops moving, that is how long it could hold it's breath.

Of course they can. Haven't you seen those t.v. video shows on which dogs are shown swimming to the bottom of a swimming pool to retrieve items.

Of course. They can jump off piers and be submerged completely before coming up for air.
