I'll be seeing a counselor or psychiatrist for the first time next week. (whatever my regular doc refers me to). I was just wondering how it all goes down. What they ask, how they act, etc.

They usually ask how many children you have; if your parents are living; how many siblings you have, etc. - and write it down, like a mini-family tree.

They might just ask how you are feeling, or why you decided to seek their help. They could ask what you think they could do to help you.

They'll probably ask what meds or other substances you take now, and have taken in the past - and if you are allergic to any meds.

Since this will be your first appointment, you will have paperwork to fill out (just as when first going to any doctor, dentist, etc.). You will probably undergo a general psychiatric evaluation - which is no biggie - just questions they need to ask.

It's very low key. You will be able to talk about whatever is troubling you. You can say as much or as little as you want. Sometimes it is hard to find the right Dr. right off the bat. Make sure you feel comfortable and safe with this person.

Usually they want to know things you would tell your close loved one i.e., mother, father, boyfriend, etc. Then they ask you if you have any problems with any of them and the way they treat you. It really depends on why you are seeing on. If you are a teen ager think about it, what can it hurt. Tell the truth. They can help you. If you need it. that's your decision.

They probably all act somewhat differently. Usually they try to get as much information from you as possible; family history, your behaviors, observations, they try to get you to "open up" and express how you feel... (not what you think) even try to make you cry- by dwelling on painful things. My belief is that if they get you to cry- it makes us think they know what they are doing.

This is just my own observation.

Each will do things differently and it certainly depends on the reason for your visit.

well at first its like your standing in front of a judge and your getting diagnosed under a microscope. just be yourself, if your weird your weird we all are. Tell them what they need to hear. Now going to phychiatrist is easier i just sit there and let him ask the questions and be truthful with him. They ask you do you hear voices or self mutilate yourself or see visions,or feel anxious or panicky?don,t worry just tell the truth and see what he can do for you.

You just talk to the person. His training involves reading what you aren't saying, and the meaning of the things that you are saying. You just have a conversation, really.

They'll likely start by asking you specific questions for a "diagnosis", and depending on your situation, go in depth on each.
