A cattle rancher has 300' of fence to make a corral. One side butts up against a canyon wall, so he doesn't need fence along the wall. He also has only 4 posts to attach fence cable to. What is maximum area (to nearest square foot) he can achieve for his corral?

No this is not a homework question, I just like to test the brains of the people on here. Oh and by the way everyone so far has been WAY off.

Assuming he makes a semi-circular corral, then the circumference of the full circle would have been twice the length of the fence.

2 * Pi * r = 600;
r = 300 / Pi
r = 95.5 (approx)

therfore the area enclosed = (pi * r^2) /2

= 14331.21 Sq Ft.

This isn't a homework question is it. Let's see 300' of fence to be used on 3 of 4 sides so 100'/side is 100*100=10,000 sq ft?

The shape would be a trapezoid not a square...huh, I think I'm too tired to figure it out tonight.

I'll give it one more try:
base 200 top 100 so {(200+100)*86.6}/2=12990 sq feet or something like that anyway. Good night.

probably a perfect hexagon, 60' to each side
