Would it not make more sense for those automated answering services to say, "For a list of languages press 1 otherwise, stay on the line"?

Totally, that is one of my biggest pet peeves. Are you serious? I'm calling from the US, where the primary language is ENGLISH, why should I have to do anything special? Those that come here not speaking english, they are the ones who should have to start dialing numbers.

Well, It's quicker if you DO speak English to just hit the button. If you can't understand the prompt, you just hang on dumbly until someone picks up. Your way would actually be slower all the way round. Imagine such a list in alphabetical order:
Press 1 for arabic
press 2 for bengali
press 3 for Catalan
press 4 for Cantonese
press 5 for...

Ps-- SmartyVero, The US does NOT have an official language. This is a nation of IMMIGRANTS. Period. You all need to accept that, or move. It's part of this nation's heritage that we've all come from all over, and we have to start somewhere. Unless you've been in the situation where you've just moved to a foreign nation and don't speak the language, shut up.

Quite honestly I think we should do away with the whole different language thing altogether! I know there are a lot of Spanish speaking people now in America and I have no problem with that, I do have a problem with people not learning English. America has always been a melting pot. It seems now we are not melting or encouraging melting. We are becoming divided by hyphenated terms like Hispanic-American and not just being called American. It is in the very best interests of all who emigrate here to learn English for their own happiness and advancement in society. I think to help people short term by having language choices on the phone, we are hindering these people long term. I want them to have every advantage and to do this they need to learn English as soon as possible.

I am soooo glad you asked! I myself can't wait to hear "for French press 3"... Heck, if there is a Spanish version, why aren't there anymore. Also, the official language of the USA is English so really having to press 1 for English is getting old! No seriously, I came to the USA from Europe and the least I can do is to speak English!

If you don't speak English you wouldn't understand the sentence "For a list of languages press 1".

Since English is the official language of the US, I think anyone who does not speak English should have to push 1. We English speaking citizens should not have to do anything but pick up the phone and talk.

Some companies automated services do just that. Try dialing Chase (bank) - they must have every language on earth on their automated system.

Would you rather press another number after listening to a list of other optional languages?

People who design the automated phone systems are thinking about what they'll have for dinner that night rather than focusing on their job.
