my puppy is 9 months old and he is so terrible!! He chews on anythinfg he can get to...which i know is normal for a puppy to do, But he chewed the side of the house off, many hoses in half, wires, gets into things, breaks yard ornaments....he doesnt listen to anybody. He likes to play A LOT but so much rough that he hurts the other dog who is 7 yrs old. I love him so much and dont want to see him go, but my mom is wanting to get rid of him. Is there anything I can do to calm his attitude & make him mind? Its hard to explain how he really is, He's just making things a mess... Can i do anything to fix his problem? Please help.

First of all...My mom is taking care of my dog right now because I am in an apartment where he cant stay-looking for a place to have him, but my mom does not want him anymore-we've tried the newspaper, he tries to eat it. Its as if he thinks its funny. We tried a kong-he wasnt interested in it. With any kind of spray no matter how terrible it is, He'll still eat it. The dog whisperer....now thats dumb because its pretty much impossible to get that guy-plus it would be thousands of $ I dont got. We've put him in a crate when no ones home. When he gets out, he's only worse. He's not lonely, theres another dog to keep him company, plus my mom, step dad and little brother. He refuses to listen no matter how stern you are with him. His mind seems so dense, as if he thinks everythings a joke. Do you think neutering him will help his behavior? I really want my mom to keep him just alittle bit longer til I can find me a place to have him. But she wants to get rid of him now :( Quick help pleaz

Is he outside by himself? Sounds like he is lonely, and/or bored. Play with him every chance you get. He sounds like a high maintenance dog. Take him to obedience training. Pet stores sell sprays that can be used to deter chewing, safe enough that they can even be sprayed on the dog (for those that tend to chew their hair off etc...) Also, if it is because he is bored or lonely, consider taking him places with you. I guarantee he will love you that much more for it. Don't get rid of him, you chose him, and he chose to love you from the sound of it. When you get a pet it is yours for the remainder of it's life. Treat him well and he will do the same in return. Good Luck!!

You're right, puppies do chew. They're teething and their gums are irritated. Get some rawhide chews or bones and he'll be happy with those. Place everything you don't want to be chewed out of range. You don't say what kind of dogs you have, but if the puppy is bigger than the older dog, it may not be the best of matches. Time will tell, though, and I think the rawhide chews/bones will make a difference. Hang in there and help mom see that he's worth keeping. Good luck.

What breed is he?

We have a Sharpei mix, and they're very chewy and dominant dogs. We needed to get her into obedience classes and crate trained. If you don't get into a professional obedience class for some dog breeds, it will be very difficult to live with him.

Some of the things we've learned are:

Patience, patience, patience - don't give in to whining or overexcited, expectant behavior

Reward is a powerful incentive. Carry treats with you always and constantly reward him for every little behavior you see as good and normal. Withhold reward when he misbehaves.

To get the dog to stop jumping on you when you come home, ignore him. Stand with your hands at your side and don't make eye contact until he displays correct behavior.

Never use the crate as a punishment. If you must discipline your dog, tie them up somewhere else. We tie ours up in the kitchen since we have an apartment. The crate is for sleeping and keeping them out of trouble only.

Catch misbehaviors IMMEDIATELY and let him know that isn't ok.

Give him lots of durable chew toys (we've found Durabone and a rope work well) or stuffed animals you'd consider disposable. Play with him as often as possible, playing fetch with the toys. Praise him when he chews on the toy of his own accord.

If separation anxiety is a problem, you'll need a separate class. It takes a lot of effort to break them of that, but it's possible.

Good luck!

Sorry to say, but that is normal with pups that age. Try making sure he knows what he can chew on, most pet stores have natural treats and you can find real bones in jsut the right size for his mouth,NOT rawhide...it can be dangerous, dogs have dies from choking and impactions as well as pesticides because most rawhide comes from other countries....next you have to make sure he knows what he can't chew on. Invest in hot sauce and a spray bottle. Fill the bottle with water and the hot sauce.( this is way cheaper than that bitter apple stuff and works just as well) and coat everything outside that he shoudl not chew on. Do that regularly and make sure he has plenty of water because he will need it. Now what to do with him and the older dog...that is the hardest. You need to fuss at him when he gets to rough and take a moment to gently pet him and calm him down. If he gets wild walk away, he wants your attention so badly that he will get the picture. If not, pray that he grows out of it soon and he will. Don't give up on him and he will turn out to be a great animal. All else fais take him to obiedience school,. you will learn a ton of things to help control him there. Good luck

This is a puppy thing he will grow out of it.Raising a puppy is like raising a kid but the good thing is when your puppy grows out of this he will make a great dog.It will be like night and day.Be patient.Getting rid of your puppy now wouldnt work because the puppy did all of its damage and its almost over.See when there done they grow up and they stop chewing .You can crate train your puppy right away the seven year old dog doesnt deserve to be agravated.I would envest in a crate but dont over use it.I forgot about the seven year old dog I would get a crate for sure Good luck

You need to play with him. I have 2 large dogs that did the same thing at the same time they are brother and sister. When you are not able to watch him buy a cage and stick him there, he won't like it and will whine but he'll get used to it and make sure you excersise him as much as you can, he also needs toys that he can chew, my 2 dogs are boxers and known for chewing so i went to a grocery store, in the pet section and got "dinosaur bones" , they are real bone and dogs love them and they keep them occupied for hours!! which means that its less time for him creating a mess. Also don't give your dogs rawhide or beefhide, it puffs up inside their belly and they can't pass it which means either money for an operation or they could die, Trust me i learned the hard way.

Wear him out with exercise. Take rather long walks as long as he gets enough water. Play fetch games with him to have him run a lot. Play tug of war games with him. After he has run off some energy, work on some commands like sit, stay, lay down, etc. and reward him. Maybe take him to a puppy training class for some help.

Gets some Bitter Apple spray from the pet store and spray it on things you don't want him to chew on. Make sure he has plenty of rawhides and bones to chew on instead.

That sounds SOOOO familiar. I have a pembroke welsh corgi who drives me insane! Honey, i know exactly what your going through. I would go to the store, and get some cayanne pepper and sprinkle it somewhere where he likes to chew up. Let him get into the object, then when he sniffs in the pepper, he's gonna really regret what he did. He might cough or rub his nose but its completely harmless. Sprinkle it all over your house, like in the trash can, your shoes, your plants, your heat pumps, everything. My dog got into some many things, He ended up costing me $3,000 in repair of my house. He almost killed himself too because he was chewing on my heat pump in the side of my house when i wasnt looking. I luckily caught him in the act and disciplined him and showed him whos boss. Also, he might turn out to be bored. Play with him and take him to dog parks. I suggest you get a doggypack to put on his back and put some water bottles in when you go walking so he'll think he has a job.Good look with your dog! My empathy!

walk him as much as possible, even run with him. It gets so much of their energy out. Every time you catch him chewing on something, take it, sternly tell him no, and give him one of his chew toys. It takes a while, but he should realize that his toys are for chewing. And get some rawhide bones or pig ears. He just needs something he will enjoy chewing on. good luck. Oh and if you have to you can probably find some obedience training for him. Petco and Petsmart both offer classes I believe.

I have a dog that is exactly the same way...her name is Trouble as a matter of fact. I ended up having to take her to obedience classes. And the vet reccommended a "Kong" toy to help with the chewing. It does help too! But try those things and I hope it helps
