So from reading your question, it seems that you want to be closer to your Dad? Do you two share any interests? Sports, mechanics, hobbies, wood working? Some kind of man stuff? Maybe you could try telling him about a project you are doing in school and ask him if he has any ideas that could help. Try to let him know that you want to be helped, and that you would like to have a closer relationship with him.
If you start a hobby that he may be interested in, maybe he will want to join in to help you. You can show him that you are really interested or enthusiastic about some of the things that you know he is "into"! Step in and ask, Dad, do you think you could help me or could we talk for a few minutes when you have time. Talk about things that all young people want to talk about with Dads, tell him things about your life, or a subject in school or a teacher or what you are feeling. Don't interrupt him but find a time when you can sit down and really get to know about him. If you have interests that you know he might like mention this to him. If he knows or played sports in school and you like sports then talk about things that you know he will respond to.
Are you by chance a middle child? Meaning there are both older and younger children in the family?...because it's not uncommon for the "middle child" to feel left out at times.
Establish a dialog, and let your Dad know that you exist. If he once enjoyed models or a hobby, perhaps you could try that, when he sees you are interested in something he once enjoyed then he may show some more interest in you. Sometimes if you need something that you are not getting, you need to put some thought and some effort into getting what you want!
Good luck, maybe your Dad is just so busy that he is overlooking the idea that you want more of his time. Let him know, and I hope some of this may help.

The next time you find yourself alone with your dad, or talking to him on the phone (in person can be harder) make a casual comment, "I wish we were closer, do you think its possible?" Then it all depends on his reaction. Depending on the kind of person he is, he may feel put on the spot, back off and try again in a few days, weeks. He may take the next step and answer the question. This hopefully will begin a heart to heart. If he does, tell how you feel and why. Watch for his body language or clues to how he is feeling. If he is showing signs of feeling uncomfortable, back off. Try again later. Both of you must feel comfortable to bridge the gap. #1 be honest and open. Good Luck!

Take it easy. Just think that he is the best friend of you in this world. And i am serious, just try to find another person who is competable with your father as a friend? so its up to you and depends on your determination to become close to him.Your Father is always there for you, you just need to approach to him. No need to adopt any formal way........

Find something that you both enjoy doing and try and spend some more time together. Tell your dad how you feel.
