Our kitten hissed when my friend came over, bc he was not used ot her. He will still hiss at a stranger now and then but he's getting better.
They make a hissing sound and bare their teeth. Hopefully, yours will outgrow it. :)

When they're really young it's kind of hard to hear. I used to bug the barn kittens at my grandparents when I was a kid, and they'd open their mouths to hiss but basically nothing came out except an almost inaudible, raspy noise. pretty cute, actually...

They only do this if they are really scared... If it isn't hissing, then they may have an upper respritory (sp?) problem which is common in kittens.
They make a hissy sound, nothing else sounds like it except for what I listed above.

You'll find out soon enough. They get all crazy looking when they throw a hissy fit. And they want nothing to do with you. Squirmmy, squirmmy, squirmmy... Kittens and cats are pretty proactive in showing you their angry emotions.
