Yes at your request you can be with your dog/cat at it's final minutes. And also at your request they either get it ready to be buried or cremated.

Owners have options for what they want done. They can take the pet with them, they can have it cremated. Cremation can be standard, where they do a bunch of pets together and keep the ashes. Which they spread somewhere to be fertalizer. Private cremation is the other choice. It is more expensive because they do your pet by itself and give you the ashes in a little box.
Some places don't have cremation as an option. In that case they are rendered. Which means cooked in a vat of water until all that is left is the fat and meat. The fat is used to make candles and soap. In the old days the meat would be made into dog food, but those days are just about over. I don't know what they do with it now.
Read "Foods Pets Die For" for the foods that still use rendered animals as ingredients.
Hope this helps.
That girl was right. Before the cremation, or rendering, company picks up the dead animals, they are kept in a freezer. Usually a regular deep freezer you see in a regular garage. It was creepy when I first saw it.
EDIT
LV is on crack. They don't let you watch cremation. At least not where I live.

we are in a position to never comprehend in the event that they feels discomfort earlier they die, even though it is so speedy that i think they do no longer. I had to have my dogs, Taz, placed down as a results of fact of bone maximum cancers. this is unhappy, yet whilst an animal can't be helped, this is the perfect element to do. Sorry on your loss. Edit: now and back injuries take place, Christmas lighting fixtures come out as quickly as a twelve months. So possibly a number of you should be somewhat extra mushy in the direction of this persons grief, think of with regard to the form you will experience in this situation earlier you initiate up ranting approximately how this guy or woman wasn't a sturdy proprietor. They took the cat to the vet and not something must be completed, it happens and it ought to take place to you too.

I don know whether vets have the "put to sleep" treatment not but im sure they wont help you to settle the body. They will ask you to bring to The Animal Hospital. They have 3 types for settling the body. The cheapest wan is they will put it inside a plastic and freeze it until accumulate a sum then they burn it together. The sec wan is they will burn will a few dogs and you are allow to attend. The most expensive wan is you can choose a date and arrange a time to withness every thing and even can take your dog's ash home after that.

If you want your animal cremated, then the vet will put the body in a freezer until the cremation place is able to pick up(about once a week). You can also take your animal home for a home burial if you would prefer.

It depends on the vet and the state and local laws about dead animals. It seems today that most vets have them incinerated but some still have them taken to landfills. I have been lucky to have the room to bury my dead pets, but not everyone has this luxury, especially city dwellers. You can witness the animal as he or she slips away but I don't think you can see the body being incinerated. I've also seen some people take their dead pet home in a blanket to bury it in a special place -- that was very sad for me to see that but then again, their pet was like a family member to them.

Owners have the option of chosing what happens to their pet BUT DID YOU KNOW.............................................................
Animals that are euthanized at shelters and vets that are not claimed ARE SENT TO RENDERING PLANTS. these rendering plants collect dead animals from all sources and then package and sell them to pet food companies. Any time that you see the words "ANIMAL" OR "MEAT" in the ingredient list of a food realize that your pet might be eating someone elses cat or dog.
I know this sounds blunt and horrible but it is time that people start pressuring pet food companies to create better quality products.
And to all the vets who replied to this....either your covering up what is really going on or cudos to you for not taking part in this horrific practice.
For anyone who wants more information there is plenty out there. Read Ann M Martin's book "Foods Pets Die For: Shocking Facts about Pet Foods". This author has even had different foods analyzed to determine the source of the protein so it would be hard to argue her information.
Good luck and I hope you chose what happens to your pet or who knows where it will end up.

renee_riley1 and bitter_winds are the only correct ones here. if you do not request cremation, as it does cost more for private cremation units, then they are put into basically a mass disposal which is a landfill. Cremation costs vets too much because private cremation and incineration units have to be paid for where the later is picked up by the city.

I held my cat while she was being put to sleep. The vet then let me take her body to my home so I could bury her in the backyard. Usually the vet will have the body cremated if you don't want to have it buried, and no you can't watch.

Rendering is a cheap viable means of disposal for euthanized pets. Pets are mixed with other material from slaughterhouse facilities that have been condemned for human consumption, such as rotten meat from supermarket shelves, restaurant grease and garbage.
