I am not a student, but since no one has answered so far, I figured I'd add my opinion. After all, I spent enough years being a student.

When I was a student, what mattered most was that the teacher took an interest in their topic. That kind of enthusiasm is contagious. The flip side is that if a teacher seems bored about their topic then there is no way the students will care.

It was also important that the assignments and tests were realistic and reflected work we had done in class earlier. That is, it is okay if the tests are hard as long as they are fair and in line with work that had been done previously. It is not okay if the tests are so surprising that no amount of preparation would have helped.

The best teachers were also good about remembering students' names and little details about them that made them seem like they actually cared.
