the older BDU/DCU patterns work really well. Up close and personal, no standard uniform will help you much, without a lot of cover and shadows. However, today's wars are not fought hand to hand. People laying down on that hill over there will be fighting the war. So if they have the proper uniform on, yes it will help very much.

The new digitized ACU pattern that the Army just adopted also works. It is said to be a happy medium between the DCU and BDU patterns and serves the same purposes effectively.

When I was in Basic, our drill sergeants had a few trainees go up onto a hilltop, and a few places on the way down. Some laid down, others kneeled, and others stood. Just 50-60 feet away, I could not see anyone unless they moved. If someone was moving and I could see them, and then they stopped, I would lose them quickly, even though I saw where they stopped.

It works, and it works very well, so long as the soldier knows anything about cover and concealment. In a serious combat situation where people are actually needing to hide from the enemy, both kinds of camo will save a soldiers life.

Yes, it breaks up the outline that your eyes naturally look for, but there are several factors that can effect how well it works. You should be still if you do not want to be seen, and your face and head need to be camoed, too. That is why there are holes in the helmet covers, so you can stuff grass or twigs in there. Also typical BDU's are made for dense woodlands. For grass lands you need different camo, like zebra stripes, which are actually very effective! Look at hunting shops, and you will see how specialized camo can get!

It works really well when you're playing paintball in the woods. But it never works for me cuz I just am not good at hiding. Trust me, it is better than wearing a white shirt. I know from experience that it's better to play paintball in camo. So to answer your question, yes I think camo works.

You asked "does camo really work"? and I can say it really does work. Remember when those army guys found Saddam Hussein hiding in that hole in the ground. He had this Styrofoam plug pulled in tight on top of himself, sealing himself in that little hole in the dirt. Well, those army dudes were wearing Cami and old stupid poop didn't see them coming.

I think the bombs dropped on his stupid poop idiot boys was probably camoed too, cause they certainly didn't see that blast coming either.

seriously, Cami works because it tricks the eye to not recognize a shape it is accustomed seeing by breaking up the recognizable shape and making it look distorted. It doesn't look familiar, so we don't recognize it.

A cop car sitting on the right berm with its radar out the window - we see it.

same car sitting on the left berm (medial strip), it is not sitting in its usual and familiar place, it is out of place, so our mind doesn't recognize it until it is too late.

It did in VietNam & it does in woods hunting. The new tan camo at least does not put an arrow on your back. My nephew is a sniper & he says the tan camo hides him on sand.

Goodness, you need to learn about the landscape, telemetry, solar and lunar cycles of the area of infiltration to understand.
