No one obsevers such creatures as serpents with the capacity for speech. In fact, such a creature is not consistent with any rational view of the world. If talking serpents don't exist, then the entire Christian religion is based on a fraud--who needs a savior from inherited sin when the event cited as orginating that debt could never have happened.

I'm not an expert in the bible or Christianity, but I believe that it was the devil that appeared in the form of a serpent. So it wasn't a talking snake, but just a snake form taken by the devil.

Once again someone gets all hung up on the story and doesn't see the meaning. Even if we assume that the story of Adam and Eve is literally true, a careful reading of it will show you that the serpent was changed by God after it tempted Eve. Although the Bible doesn't specifically state the fact it is possible that along with taking its ability to walk, God may have taken its ability to talk.

On the other hand. Your question assumes that all Christians take this story as literally true. That is not the case. More moderate or liberal Christians, which by the way is more that 75% of the Christian World population do not take all of the stories in Genesis as literal. The story is told to demonstrate that those who disobey the commands of God will not be as close to Him as those who try to keep His commandments. We were created as innocent and perfect creatures and by choosing to disobey we as a species have continued to distance ourselves from our Creator. We are upstart and rebellious children. Jesus is the Son who was perfect and obedient. He sacrificed himself so that through Him we might all be brought closer to the Father. The Inherited sin of which we speak is actually arrogance. We believe that we are wise beings, that we know too much to believe "impossible myths." Pride and arrogance is the worst of all sins because it leads to all the others. Since we are all filled with these evils in abundance, we all need to be saved from them.

The Bible identifies Satan as having spoken for the serpent in much the same way as a ventriloquest might throw his voice and speak for a dummy. There are no lies in the Bible unless humans have changed the original scriptures.

The story goes that an angel took the form of a serpent. The angel was (obviously) expelled from heaven.
