There are various degrees of being vegitarian. It depends on what you feel personally. Sometimes people feel comfortable eating eggs, milk, cheese and other dairy products. Others feel ok eating fish and other seafood. To cut out any animal byproducts means that you are vegan, they have to be very careful about what they eat. There are some kinds of honey they can't eat because of the way the farmers treatment of the bees. Just make sure you are getting enough protein, vitamins and minerals you can only get from meat products.

The reason many people seem to think that chicken and fish are still important in their diet is because they simply are uncertain how to address the issue of protein nourishment and maybe are even unsure that they’re ready to be completely vegetarian. The latter point is a personal issue. If you have not unequivocally come to terms with eliminating anything with a face from your daily menu, then you’ve almost got it, but not quite. No shame, no blame, but you’re not a vegetarian, yet.

Yes. Vegetarians don't eat meat, or the flesh of mammals. Since neither fish nor chickens are mammals, they're fair game. There are different levels of vegetarianism, however, and more strict vegetarians may not eat even fish or chicken. The most strict are vegans and they don't eat anything created from anything made by another animal, like eggs, cheese, milk, etc.

If you have been a vegetarian for almost all your life you would know that vegetarians dont eat animals. Fish and chicken are animals last time I checked.
There is no such thing as a semi-vegetarian or a "white meat" vegetarian PERIOD.
No Vegetarian will eat fish. If he/she does...he/she is NOT a vegetarian no matter what they call themselves.
Most of the answers above are wrong. ALL animal flesh is off limits.

Many people give up eating flesh on moral or compassionate grounds, while others become vegetarian to improve their health and well-being.
Vegetarian food is extremely healthy and provides all the important vitimans, minerals,
proteins, carbohydrates and fats for a nutritious, well-balanced diet.
WHAT IS A VEGETARIAN?
There are different kinds of vegetarians:-
1. LACTO VEGETARIANS
They eat no flesh of any kind. Their diet consists of fruit and vegetables and dairy products(vegetarian cheese only)
2. LACTO-OVO-VEGETARIANS
They eat the same as the lacto vegetarians but also include eggs in their diet.
3. VEGANS
They eat only plant food. They eat no flesh, no eggs and no dairy products. Some will eat honey but not others.
4. FRUITARIANS
They eat only fruits, nuts and seeds.(This includes the fruit of vegetables such as tomatoes and courgettes. However they never eat the roots of plants such as carrots and potatoes)
5. SEMI-VEGITARIAN
They occasionally eat fish.

Your mother isn't lying, but she's misinformed. There are several forms of vegetarianism, but if it requires killing an animal, it can't hardly be considered vegetarianism. Maybe if the meat companies started just taking parts off of animals, but left them alive, fewer people would become vegetarian, but I ask you, what kind of a life can a cow with a wooden leg lead?
Go easy on your mom - she only means well. Tell her you don't want to let your body be a graveyard for your friends.

Yes, vegitarions can eat fish, and chicken, and steak, and even old ladies, but vegetarions on the other hand don't. Otherwise they'd be meat-a-tarions...

There are several kinds of vegetarians. Most eat no flesh, which means poultry, fish or meat. Some will eat fish, but not poultry or meat. My sister in law will not anything with a 'face', so she won;t eat meat, poultry or fish, except shellfish, like clams & oysters. Interestingly, she will eat shrimp, which is a point of contention for us. I say shrimp have faces, she says they don't. Some eat no eggs or dairy, some do.
Anyhow, I eat no meat, but do eat fish & poultry. I consider myself to be on the road to vegetarianism, but am not one yet. If you eat fish or chicken, you are NOT a vegetarian.

Pure vegetarianism means that you don't take any animal product except milk. Some sect of vegetarians take fish. But eating chicken is not vegetarianism.
Beware! As you do not know the food habits of vegetarians you may go into malnutrition. You must take minimum two glasses of milk everyday.

Hahahaha.... your mum must be desperate to get you to eat!
I am vegeterian myself for health reasons.
Most people who are not vegeterians are not familiar with what it means to be vegeterians.
Some think that being a vegeterians means you abstain from MEAT.. and seafoods like FISH, PRAWNS, CRABS are NOT considered meat.
There are others who think that people turn vegeterian because of religion and think that the fact that you do not eat beef makes you a vegeterian.
In actual fact, there are a few kind of vegeterians..
1) Lacto-octo vegeterians: Are people who only eat vegetables and no meat, no seafood. But they drink milk...and they eat eggs.
2) Vegans: People who eat nothing but veg only...
And there are others who are only semi vegeterians.. as in, they eat fish, chickens.. etc. They are not really considered vegeterians.
Ultimately, it is about why you want to be vegeterian. If you are doing it for religious reasons, you would be better off checking with the religious authorities what you can or cannot eat.
If you are doing it for health, then it will depend on how strict you want to be. If you want good health, maybe you can just eat less meat and fish. If you want better health, become and lacto octo vegeterian.. if you want GREAT health, then become a vegan! :)
PS: All mothers in the world are like that. They will slowly learn to respect your choice when you show them that it is really healthy. I shared with my mum about some reasons why I turned vegeterian and she is now a vegeterian :)
But I still get alot of flake for making my 13-month-old vegeterian. My mom's friend would say it will give him mal nutrition, make him stupid, make his development slow..
BUT, he is only 13 months and as tall as a 2 year old. Development wise, he is right on time for most things and faster for some ;)
You can view his pics here: http://verityy.blogspot.com
