Well there are any number of old brick townhouses in Washington that are painted red over the bricks. However, it is not a routinely used color, probably because red has a tendency to fade in the sun more than any other color. You will see that on red cars often. Something about the pigment that oxidizes quickly.
As to the comment about the houses of ill-repute, that was usually a red light in the window, not a red house.

Well... I live in the U.S. and I can honestly say, that I have NEVER seen the outside of a house painted red. Ever. The interior of a house can be painted red though, without it being odd. I don't know, I guess if it was the outside, It would stick out like a sore thumb. Haha. Hope this helps.

I agree with the answer that it is because the color red was associated with women of ill repute I will say, and the houses they worked in. The color is still associated with this.

Well I can tell you why I was told not to use red it's because it's an angry color. So I guess you get mad eventually I don't know that's just what I heard so who knows on how true it is.
