My dog (he's a great dane) acts like a real idiot most of the time. When he does something really stupid, sometimes I become so enraged, I can't help but put the fear of God in him with a good beating. Yesterday, my wife and kids were gone, and I got so mad, I jumped on top of him and flipped him to his back, and just started raining terror down on him with both fists. I must have been yelling pretty loud too, because when I looked up, I saw my neighbor looking at me over the fence. He turned and ran, and I'm worried he's going to turn me in. What should I do?!?!?

OK. Come on guys. A Great Dane is a big dog. I figure if he can act stupid, he can take a beating like a man. It's not abuse. In the animal kingdom, mother/father animals regularly bite / maul their offspring for punishment. I'm just disciplining him like his real dog-father would.

You people are probably the type that don't believe in hitting children either, aren't you?

Update: OK, everybody. I know I'm wrong. I have pledged not to hit him any more. Instead, I borrowed a cattle prod from a local farmer and will use that to shock him from now on. I didn't think a regular dog shock collar would be enough since he's so big. If a cattle prod can shock a full grown 1200 lb bull into submission, though, it ought to work on my 150 lb dog. Also, I figure if it's humane enough to shock a cow, shocking a dog with it can't be too bad. Is that better?

A dog is going to act like a dog. You, however, are not a dog. There is no reason for you to "beat" your dog with both FIST! You should get rid of your dog ASAP. Yes, a great dane is a large dog, but still you are a person that, supposedly, has the ability to reason. You should probably seek some kind of anger management. As for your dog taking a beating like a man, what kind of idiot are you? He is not a man, he is a dog. Don't expect him to be able to think like you think ( which apparently is very well either). I personally hope that your neighbor does turn you in.

Hopefully your neighbor did turn you in.
This is animal cruelty A FELONY punishable by jail time.
I wouldn't let it happen again, and you should be ashamed of yourself.
It doesn't matter how big the dog is it doesn't deserve this, and you don't deserve him.
Danes are clumsy dogs, he can't help it, they are like big LOVABLE goofs.

IDIOT... if you are worried that he's going to turn you in, then you already KNOW IT'S A FREAKING CRIME.
For pete's sake, if you didnt' want this type of reaction, why be so crazy as to come here and post that you even did such a thing.

You're the idiot. Poor dog needs to find a better home. It's your job to be patient and be the teacher. Do you think they automatically know things? Hope the neighbor turns you in.

yes...yes...ur an idiot, call a professional dog trainer, they teach you and the dog...good luck. And hopefully if u can't handle it , u give the dog another chance and look for a Dane rescue. It could make some one else happy, even though u are lacking in self control...

Man! You NEED to get control of your temper! And you wonder why the dog acts that way? The dog LEARNED it from YOU!!!
Perhaps an anger management course is in order for you. Maybe you should surrender the dog before you end up in court on cruelty to animal charges. Hope you get things in check soon.

He should turn you in. You would deserve it you dog beater. You are the stupid one for thinking your dog has the ability to reason--it doesn't.

I hope your dog turns on you one day during one of these beatings. I'm sure you'll tell everyone how surprised you are, but again, you would deserve it.
