My daughter 17 borrowed my credit card this morning to get gas. I was looking for it all day and thought I had lost it. She left for work at 6.50 a.m this morning and said she didn't want to wake me!! I called her on her cellphone this evening and asked if she had my credit card and she said yes. She came straight home with it but I went ballistic, my husband calmed me down. What are your opinions of this matter. I am really upset.

That was so not cool of her to do! She is never to take anything of yours without permission, but especially something as important of a credit card. At the very least, if she didn't want to wake you, a note left in its place telling you she had it would have kept you from thinking you lost it. I would be upset if I were you, too. And I would punish her for taking something that didn't belong to her.

I think that "borrowing" your credit card without your permission is otherwise called "stealing." Using your credit card without your permission is also a legal problem.

You need to have a talk with your daughter. Even if she really didn't want to bother you, she should have called you to let you know where the card was and that she had it. But she SHOULD have asked your permission first. It sounds like you need to set some boundaries with your daughter, and she is not as mature at 17 as she thinks she is.

Getting "ballistic" is concededly not the best way to handle the situation, but it is too serious to ignore. Don't let your husband "calm you down" so much that you let the situation pass without addressing the issues.

Good luck.

You have a right to be upset, if you never let her borrow it. Then she had no right to have taken it. But on the other hand, if you let her have it all the time, then she probably thought that it was no big deal and you would not care. She was wrong for not telling you, she could have even left you a note, but I don't know if going ballistic was the answer. But then again it depends on if she spent more than she told you about. I would just tell her that from now on, that no matter what, you are to know when she has your card.

If you are mad then you obviously have trust issues with her. If you trust her then you would know she really needed it and wouldn't use it for anything stupid. You should be glad that at 17 she is getting up before 7 am during summer vacation to go to work. She didn't lie to you about it so calm down and tell her you are sorry for freaking out on her. Way to make her resent you...

First she shouldn't have taken it without asking.
She needs to know that it isn't ok for her to do that, no matter if she needs or not. Could lead to something even worse down the road.
She needs to get a debit card and so do you. Try reading the book "Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey.

Legally, she's not old enough to use the card, she's not authorized to use the card, and she didn't have permission to use the card.

Ground her butt and teach her respect for credit cards! Use this as a lesson in identity and credit card theft. And keep it somewhere safe from now on.

I agree with KissFLgood she gave a great answer. It's all about trust, you are a family, love each other and trust one another. Sounds like you have great kid there, you might ask her next time to please leave you a note on the dresser. If she was my child she could take my credit card any time she needed it, WHY because I love my children.
